The chimpanzee is the closest living relative to humans, sharing 98.5% of our DNA. It is also one of the only animals that is self aware (the others being elephants and dolphins). A chimpanzee can recognize itself in a mirror, where a monkey can not.

On an odd side note, chimps are 98.5% genetically identical to humans, but we can not reproduce with them. This argument is often used to shoot down those wild "aliens are trying to cross-breed with us" claims. We would have about as much success mating with an alien as we would with a house plant.

She came on to me! What was I supposed to do? Plus, she was asking for it anyway - she was wearing a short skirt.

Of course we couldn't mate with a Chimpanzee despite the 98.5% of shared DNA. God knew what he was doing when he created all of us.

If you ever see my roommate's obnoxiously excessive body hair and love for bananas, you might doubt the above statement.

Hmmm, was it tried both ways? Like w/ donkey's and horses. if one impregnates the other, the offspring is infertile, but if its the other way around it is fertile.

Uh oh...facts not updated. Recent research is pointing to the Bonobo as being closer in relatedness to Humans. Bonobos are also closely related to chimps, being separated from the major chimp population by a river in...Tanzania? I think.

curious thing about the bonobos: matriarchal society, they often masturbate and fellate each other, and are also the only other primates (after human) to mate face to face.

I believe genetically, they are around 99% identical to humans. Not a lot of research has been done on bonobos, however, as chimps have held the spotlight for several decades....

linky for bonobos

These are lumped in with chimpanzees. Bonobo = Pygmy Chimp. Not sure if they're the same family though.
