The leading theory on why we use the shortened "bra" instead of "brassiere"? It fit better on billboards in th '30's.

I'm surprised they could advertise stuff like that back in the 30's. Wasn't that back when swimming suits had more fabric than an average wedding dress today?

Today's fact got me curious about the history behind this. Apparently Vogue magazine (the magazine the elite of society lived by) started recommending brassieres around 1907. They really came into fashion shortly afterward, and were heavily advertised in the 20's and 30's. Billboards and newspapers were the top methods of mass advertising, so there were a lot of ads for them.

BTW- as a side note, the cup size system of A-D was created in 1935.

Whoever came up with the cup size system was retarded... OK, we got A, B, C, D... let's hold on D for a minute... ok, still on D.... ok, let's skip up a few, where does that leave us, G? Or you have the British system, where they'll double up the D, only have one E, and then have every subsequent letter in single and double varieties. How fucking retarded is that? Thank God I'm not a woman... hard enough buying shoes, I don't want to have to deal with that nonsense when it comes to underwear.
