Today's harvest from the Jeeebus yard: Starfruit

This was about 5 minutes worth of picking from one of our four starfruit (carambola) trees. These things produce a ridiculous amount of fruit. Need to start juicing them or find some recipe to incorporate them into - too much fruit to just eat straight up.

I always thought starfruit was too weird to eat until I actually tried it. Now I am planning to plant one in the yard.

Those look tasty, I like bronze tint. Most starfruit I've bought wasn't ripe enough or lacked any flavor. I did not realize it grew on trees, thought it was a vine fruit.

What climates will it tolerate?

It looks like the are very temperate. USDA zone 9 is minimum but they prefer zone 10 or hotter. Hot and humid seems to be their preference.
It's one of those fruits that you love to eat but thank god you don't live were they grow.

holy shit that's a lot of starfruit

they're expensive around here, but when i do get them i just shave off the points, slice, and pick out the seeds

Unfortunately I do live where they grow. 🙁

Those look great! How did you keep the birds and bugs from getting to them?

At least half of the fruits either fall to the ground or are eaten by ants/other bugs. It produces so many fruits that it's not really a huge issue. Planning to wrap the trunks of the trees with Tanglefoot which should hopefully keep the ants out.

Here you go.

Below is the one where the big crop came from. Tree needs some serious pruning to get its shape under control, but it's blooming like crazy again so will have to wait until winter sometime to prune it.

Most (if not all) tropical fruit bought from the grocery store is disgusting/tasteless. It is usually harvested very immature and most of it is from south/central America (requiring it to be treated/sterilized prior to shipment).

I've had several grocery store mangoes and they are all awful. If those were the only mangoes I had, I would not have 12 mango trees in my yard.
