Today was "ethnic" food day. Also, does "Product of PRC" mean "Made in China"?

Today after work it I went to a European deli and picked up some cold cuts, pickled mushrooms, and peanut snacks for which I couldn't read the ingredients on the package, as it was in Serbian. Then I went to a middle eastern grocery and picked up pita, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves, among other things. Then off I went off to a Korean restaurant and had me some pork bone soup. Yum.

I finally managed to translate some of the ingredients for the peanut snacks. It was indeed peanut, corn grits, oil, and salt as I expected, since this Serbian snack called Smoki looks exactly like the Israeli snack Bamba we're addicted to. I was hoping to find a closer source of Bamba since those are only in the Jewish area across town. Unfortunately, Smoki isn't quite as good as Bamba, probably since Bamba has more peanuts.

However, what surprised me was the jar of pickled mushrooms and the can of Lebanese stuffed grape leaves both say "Product of PRC" on the container. Does this mean these foods were made in China?

That means it was at minimum packages in china but it is possible that the contents were produced elsewhere.

OK. I have so-called Greek yogurt, made in Canada. I also have two cats, but they are very old.

BTW, I knew PRC meant China, but I was surprised to see this labelling. Everything else (electronics, etc.) just says "Made in China", and also I was surprised to see this for imported Lebanese and slavic food, so I was wondering if it could mean something else too.

If you're going to do ethnic food at least be adventurous with it, try something like this next time.

Actually, I have had that before, when I was a kid. Don't remember what it tastes like though. It was not Korean though, but Chinese.

I've also had the Japanese delicacy, natto. I really didn't like it much.

Perfect. I love Greek yogurt, and old cats are well broken in.

The PRC designation always strikes me as being a little shady; like they're trying to hide the country of origin. I have a strict policy of not putting anything in or on my body that was made in China.

Lebanese recipe and premium quality on the can didn't give it away? Not too mention the CPR label that is located somewhere on the tin. Honestly man your pic just screams don't buy me.

Tilapia is the same way though. Lots of the frozen cubes you get from the store say product of China. You'll be fine man. Peel back the top on those tins and enjoy them pickled mushrooms and Lebanese stuffed grapes. Which I'm assuming is humus not actual Lebanese people diced up and rolled into grape leaves but....it is China.

Well, the first can had a sticker... which just happened to cover the "Product of PRC" part... that said "Imported by Shah Trading Company, Montreal" etc. I just happened to notice it later on another can of it I got, since it didn't have the sticker.

BTW, Cortas Food is based out of Beirut.

What was interesting in a recent NPR broadcast was that I learned a certain amount of Alaska salmon that is caught in Alaska, is sent to China, defrosted, filleted, boned, refrozen and sent back to us. And the labor is so much cheaper that it makes all of that cost affordable. Crazy.

That looks like Rice Krispies Squares except with Coco Puffs.

Ya, the PRC thing. I saw that label a few times in the past year or two, still mainly see plain China. Guess they want everyone to know it's a people's republic?
