Today, its official

Bateluer

Lifer
Bateluer the Senior Airman becomes Bateluer the Staff Sergeant. 🙂

Two weeks from now, I'll actually be getting paid for the work I've been doing for the last 9 months. 🙂

My supervision also wasted no time making me the RO of two airman, an A1C and a SrA, should be interesting.

From the Wiki since I don't feel like explaining the rank to the non military ATOT members.

Staff Sergeant (SSgt) is E-5 in the U.S. Air Force, just above Senior Airman and below Technical Sergeant, with a US Military Pay Grade of E-5. It is the Air Force's first non-commissioned officer rank as well as the first Air Force rank to which promotion is on a competitive basis. Senior Airmen are considered for promotion if they attain that rank on or before March 1st of that testing year (this is so that they will have a minimum of 6 months time-in-rank before the first promotion date of that testing year - September 1st). Staff Sergeants are expected to be technically proficient and function as first-line supervisors within a workcenter. After being selected for promotion Senior Airmen must attend Airman Leadership School, which teaches them basic leadership and how to write performance reports.

The Airforce isn't as exciting as I had hoped.

Hehe, and I hope to start out as O2 pay grade if and when I enter the service. But congrats though, don't mean to piss in your cherios.

Here's another tidbit that kinda makes me a little nervous.

With the AF downsizing and my career field 'overmanned', almost all our NCOs on my shift will have either separated or cross trained within 14 months. This will leave me as the ranking NCO on my shift. There will be other NCOs on the shift to be certain, but I'll be ranking one.

Congrats.

Over here, a staff sergeant is actually a very senior NCO rank. It's only one below warrant officer within our grades.

As I said, in 14 months, every other NCO on the shift will have PCSed, cross trained, or separated. At the moment, I am the only one who hasn't gotten any orders or such to leave. Of course, now that I've said that, I'll get orders tomorrow. 😛

It varies by the person, some staffs are really good, some people just made it waaay too soon. The Basic leadership courses at the ALS here cover quite a bit of information, Profession of Arms related, Human Resource, oral and written communication. There was quite a bit of public speaking in the course.

Unfortunately, there are always those who slide through doing just enough to get by. 🙁
Fortunately, a lot of those are getting weeded out by Fore Shaping.
