Accutane is a wonder drug! I use to have horrible cystic acne on my back, chest, and face, and after only the very first month there was a massive improvement. My brother suffered from bad acne too, and Accutane cured him as well. Don't fret the side effects. All you have to worry about is some dry skin.

I'd still be cautious. It basically poisons you.

Not saying don't take it- appearance is very important, and zits can be painful. Just be careful.

Be extremely careful with this drug. Sure, everyone is singing its praises, but there are a lot of side effects that can creep up on you. When I was on it, the physical side effects included flaking skin, lips chapping so bad over night they were bleeding, nose bleeds, and sometimes nausea and headaches as a result of it. I'd recommend Aquaphor or vaseline for your lips overnight and to keep your skin properly lubricated with Cetaphil products. A buddy of mine who started on it a few months before me had very similar side effects from it.

On top of that, if you suffer any tendencies associated with mental illnesses such as depression or bi-polar disorder, DO NOT TAKE ACCUTANE.

Also, when you get the monthly blood tests, make sure they switch up arms every month. Otherwise they may collapse the vein they're taking blood from.

Im on minocyline right now, doesnt seem to be working that well.

Was going to try Accutane, but if its the one that im thinking, it makes you more depressed, and I guess your chances of suicide goes up. Least thats what I heard.

The stuff did nothing for me. It mostly went away as I got older but I still have occasional acne and I'm 24.

good luck

reading this thread, I guess side effects are worse for some than others... they were pretty bad for me when I was on it during my junior year of high school. lips were chapped 24/7 no matter what I put on them (there were a couple times where it was actually hard to eat) and I got bloody noses all the time. a teacher in high school actually pulled me aside one day and asked if I was using coke. lol. I did feel depressed, but I was also like 15-16 at the time... who doesn't feel depressed at that age :p

Damn, talk about side effects. Chemo drugs cause fewer problems.

I dunno, I take metholtrexate for my arthritis (though it's also a chemo drug) and sudden death was listed as a side effect on the literature they originally gave me 6 years ago. I don't know about you, but I sorta consider that a MAIN effect...

So does Tylenol...

When I was first recommended it, my mom kinda threw a fit because all she (and most people) have ever heard was what had been on the news and stuff regarding the "link" between suicidal behavior and accutane. My dermatologist said that with how tight it is regulated (it's easier to get morphine) it is the safest drug on the market. Your PCP isn't able to prescribe it-- only a certified dermatologist is, so one can assume he or she has taken classes and has specific training with regards to it.

He said it's almost a pain with the bureaucratic stuff needed to get the drug out to people who need it. But really, you hear about the side effects because they have to tell you them. The worst proven side effect only affects women (via causing miscarriages / deformities if pregnant), with the other side effects being extremely minor. Just buy yourself a tube of chapstick (a clear, moisturizing one is best) and apply it all the time to your lips and maybe a little on the inside of your nose if you feel they're getting dry.

Don't be scared of the blood tests either. They're painless and take 30 seconds. I'm telling you, it's one of the best things that's ever happened to me. Having to deal with acne that kept getting worse and worse... applying 3 different prescription creams twice a day, taking minocycline three times a day proved to be so much of a nuisance. They started me on 40mg twice a day, which after 2 months wasn't doing anything, so they pushed me to 60mg (I think is what it was) and, literally, within 2 weeks it was 50% gone; 4 weeks, 75%; 8 weeks, 100%. 3 years off it, I still get the occasional zit, but everything is clean as a whistle. I don't even use face cleanser now.

The only thing I will say about it is, from reading the rest of the thread, my lips still do tend to be chronically dry. Even on the rainiest, most moist days, I still need chap stick so my lips don't start peeling. Still, such a small price to pay...

I'd recommend Cetaphil "Gentle Skin Cleanser" and "Moisturizing Lotion." Don't bother with regular chapstick type lip balm. Stock up on Aquaphor Healing Ointment. Nothing will keep your lips from chapping nearly as well. Start using these products right away even though the dryness will take a little while to kick in.

ah heck.

Dude...acne, no matter how small or large, is bad news...go get that stuff cleared up now!

if its not severe, just use Proactiv. Accutane should be a last resort, as that stuff can really fvck you up. I never got to finish because I started to have some mental issues with using it.

I also ended up at Accutane years ago. It worked really well, and I don't remember even experiencing many of the common side effects. I never had zits again after the Accutane. That stuff WORKED.

I'm 32 now, and I think I must have been taking Accutane around 14-16 or so. Can't remember for sure now.

I took accutane about 8 years ago. I had severe acne, and no other treatments worked. I was actually taking the accutane and minocycline at the same time.

Didn't have any of the horrible side effects everyone talks about, just dry skin for the most part. I used the Aveeno oatmeal lotion everyday on my face, which helped with the dryness (it was so dry my skin would peel and flake). You'll also get a sunburn after being in the sun for 5-10 minutes, so make sure you wear sunscreen. The dermatologist should have some sunscreen that won't irritate acne.

To this day my skin still has a little bit of a reddish complexion from the accutane. But, considering all of the risks associated with taking the drug, I would do it again in a heartbeat - it is a miracle drug for acne sufferers!

Accutane is somewhat of a miracle drug. On the other hand, like others mentioned you'll be really dry. I kept getting nosebleeds when I was on it, blood would just gush out my nose with no warning :p - Didn't happen too often though, 3-5 times maybe. I haven't been on accutane for 6-7 years, but I remember it being pretty easy to cope with. Acne fuggin sucks. I had acne before everyone else in school had it too, they thought I was diseased or something (they were pretty dumb). I still get acne pretty often, not big breakouts though, just a medium sized zit here and there. My lips are as dry as they always were. Good luck with your treatment.

Seriously considering going down this route...

Interesting to hear all the stories.

It is a miracle acne drug, with great outcomes if used correctly.
Good luck!

No kidding. I used the stuff in HS. I was pulling chunks of dry skin off my feet and face that were an inch or so square.

Lots of water, sunscreen, and good chapstick will lessen these effects though. Have fun.

Edit: As for if it was worth it? 1000 times yes!

Same effects for me, took it for about 18 months.

Did your doctor ever try minocycline for you?

Jumping right to accutane is rather drastic.

minocycline (along with the kitchen sink) was previously prescribed.

Ah, OK. It worked wonders for me. Bummer it didn't work for you.

My wife was prescribed some of that minocycline for her roscea(sp? red flush face). She had a side effect of that. She turned yellow, jaundice, her liver was malfunctioning. It took her about 6 weeks to turn normal color. Along with the color, came severe itching, the kind that won't go away after itching. one of her liver levels(AST or ALT) was over 300. needless to say no more tetracycline family drugs for her again.
