Some one had left a six-pack of plastic Sprite bottles in our freezer over night. I found them this morning, and I immediately noticed one of them was still completely liquid! They were wrapped in plastic packaging, and so I knew it hadn't just been placed there.

I showed my roommate and he sort of smiled, then told me to open it. I assumed it would explode, or something. He told me it would freeze from the top down, right before my eyes. I opened it, and sure enough, the Sprite began to freeze, from the top down to the bottom. He offered no explanation as to why this occurs, but mentioned he has seen the same phenomenon in beer bottles left in a freezer.

So, why does this occur?

I'm sure it has to do with the warm oxygen hitting the liquid upon opening.

I've seen that happen as well. The liquid becomes supercooled so that as soon as it warms up enough to freeze that single crystal causes a reaction throughout the liquid.

...at least that was my thought at the time.

too much pressure to freeze most likely

[edit to add] I think it's similar to deep water. Ice is less dense that liquid water, so excessive amounts of pressure can easily prevent water from freezing.

Here's the kicker: Once the bottle of pop froze completely, it began to thaw and overflow from the bottle.
