I miss living in a nature-filled area. Beautiful pictures, deer are magnificent animals.

Nice pics, hzl eyed grl! :) I haven't had any luck getting any pics of the deer around here. I almost bumped into a doe once in the mountains walking around a turn. I had my camera with me, but every time I'd start to raise it for a pic, the deer would go a little farther away behind some trees and then stop and look at me. It would let me walk toward it, but would walk off every time I raised up the camera. :(

It's not unusual for a doe to come fairly close to people around here, but not the bucks. And like 0roo0roo said, you really don't want them to, they can be very aggressive. I was sitting in my car once waiting to make a left turn and a big buck came out of the mountain to my right and then stood in front of the car. He started pawing the asphalt, snorting (it was cold out and I could see his breath) and then he lowered his head and started toward the front of my car. I backed up and he came toward me some and then turned and started toward the stream on the other side of the road. I started forward then and he turned and came at the driver's side of my car. I barely missed getting hit by him. That big rack could have done some damage. Not to mention the fact that he probably would have knocked himself out in the middle of the road.

Ornery, I hate to hear the stories that the guys are telling this time of the year about the deer they've killed, but I understand the need to keep the population under control too. People are always hitting them with their cars around here and you see their bodies beside the road all the time. I've just missed hitting several myself. They're so fast, they just seem to come out of nowhere. Three ran in front of me once. The principal at the school where I worked a few years ago hit one on his way to work. He managed to make it the rest of the way to the school and then collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital. The front of his car was practically demolished. I don't how it is where you live, but the hunters around here killed quite a few black bear too during the short bow season for them. One was around 400 lbs. A lot of people were having problems with them coming into their yards last spring, including my mom. One came right up on her back porch and dragged an almost 50 lb. bag of dog food up on the hillside behind her house and then ate it all and left the bag behind. :Q

Crab - I'm glad you didn't crash. We still need to meet up some day. :)

MrsBugi - I love deer. I'll have lived in Virginia for three years in March and I'm still excited when I see them. It's also cool to see bears here. (Yeah, I don't go outside to feed the bears. lol When one came through our yard, we went out on our upper deck where you can't access it from the ground.)

Stretchman - I have fibromyalgia. A flare-up is when I hurt more than normal and the "fibro fog" is way worse.

I was happy that Tim thought to take some pictures yesterday. Usually I'll just take pictures when we have several in our back yard.

Like you, we see a lot of deer along the sides of streets that have been hit. :( Well, that along with an assortment of other critters. I've had to stop a few times to let chipmunks cross the street.

Those deer look anorexic! Thank you for feeding them :)

Living in the sticks does have its advantages.

Wow, hzl - that is so cool! We have lots of deer here, but they're very skittish. Wish I could hand-feed them like that.

... I understand the need to keep the population under control...

Since we aren't too comfortable living with deer's natural predators, we're going to have to do the job ourselves. We've GOT to make much longer hunting seasons, and increase limits.

Hey, Joe, how have you been? I named the buck that I fed, buck. (You know, like Buck Rogers.) lol

Engineer - No soup for you! No deer sausage, either! :p

Odin - It's ALWAYS a good thing to do. Especially bears. That's even more fun.

Of course they do. Ever heard of wolves and mountain lions?

Not on the east coast. And woves are rare to nonexistant everywhere in the lower 46 except Montana/Yellowstone, though there are programs to reintroduce them in various parts of the Rockies.

Oh man, that rocks. I wish we had wilderness around here that I could get that clsoe to a deer or something. Best I get is to feed the raccoons and our family or stray cats on my deck.

That doesn't mean they don't have natural predators. It means humans exterminated them.

Then I guess you don't know how to prepare it properly or you are going to the wrong butcher.

Deer are a nuisance and they really don't have many natural predators around anymore. At least in midwest. If you go out at night to shine deer you can see packs well over a hundred. You also have to be very sharp when driving at night because they like to pop out.

I grew up in the country. I hated it. Nothing to do.

I also wish deer hunting season was longer because their population is just completely out of control.
