What about the crosses on graves in Arlington cemetery? The cemetery is on government property.

The headstones for the graves represent individual so it wouldn't apply. Some of them have the star of David.

If at the entrance of ANC there were a giant cross that would probably be unconstitutional

I don't see a difference. The headstones are bought and paid for by the government. The land is owned and maintained by the government.

Why is one OK, but not the other?

Why is a memorial to an individual OK, but a memorial to a group not OK?

Because not everyone in the cemetary is Christian. Remember the headstones are for the individual and the family chooses which symbol to include. Having the cross at the entrance would be a defacto endorsment of Christianity.

So having a cross and a star isn't an endorsement of Judeo-Christian religions?

It is.

His point is that putting it on an individual grave is an endorsement for that particular individual. It is respect for the individual fallen, honoring their wishes, which is a reasonable thing to do.

A statue at the gate of a cemetery would appear to represent all of those buried, which would not be entirely inclusive, would it?

to me, this is all bullshit, anyway.

No. It's just a bare fact.

Here lies X. He is now dead. He was a human. He was male. He had brown hair. He served in the Armed Forces. He was married. He had 2 children. He jerked off 6843 times in his life. He believed in Santa until age 8. He believed that a man who died 2000 years ago had spooky magic powers until the day he died. His blood type was O negative. His first car was a 1954 Plymouth. He couldn't remember where he left his house keys between 10:24 and 10:32 AM on November 14, 1957. At 10:32AM he found his keys on the kitchen table.

I remember the cross on Mount Soledad in San Diego. Visable from most of San Diego, at least the northern areas. We drove up there every so often for fun. Highest point in San Diego. Thing was, too often drunk kids climbed over the rod iron fence around the cross, climbed up the cross then fell off to their death by landing on the sharp spikes of the iron fence surrounding the cross. They could just replace it with an American flag or the state of CA flag, and remove that dangerous rod iron fence.

ps. A flag would be more logical for American Vets, than a cross, anyway.
