toasty hard drives

Not out the realm of possibility, but highly unlikely. Hard drives can run very, very hot and keep going. I think your problem lies elsewhere.

I agree w/ BadThad. Your computer will get lock up if your HD is way too hot. But unless you have some reason to suspect that your HD is getting too hot (like monitoring software warning), I will check your problem somewhere else. Maybe your cpu/video car fan is too dusty, check your system fans...etc

Hard drives can get pretty hot. The drives in my dad's PC exceeded 60C - there were three of them, each 7200rpm drives, crammed right close together in the 3.5" internal bays. There still were no problems with them, but I moved two of them to the 5.25" bays using some cheap metal adapters. There's still no airflow over them, but at least there is open space, which has helped bring their temperatures down.
I like the cases that have a hard drive cage set right in front of an intake fan. My case is an Antec SLK3700AMB - 5-drive cage directly in front of a 120mm intake fan.

Heat can kill hard drives. If I were you I would change the hard drive enviroment before going further and see if the lockups continue.

well i replaced the video card fan. with a zalman and it works great i also have a ac freezer 64 pro with the fan pointed towards the video card and the open end up towards to ram which direction does the fan blow? its so far so good

I'm using Activesmart to monitor my drives smart tolerances and temperatures

The smart values change fairly often, mostly the seek time measurement... right now two drives are at 44c, I've seen them get into the 50c range

I'm wondering what the specified tolerances are, I guess they print them in the manual

But I still can't find a good program to check files for data corruption

hmm i used the hitachi drive fitness tet and other sutff they gave to me and it was like data corruption testing balh balh stuff
