To wait or not to wait

I REALLY need a new system very soon.

I don't know if i should wait for the i7, or buy a quad (maybe duo-core)

I want my PC to be as bug-free as possible, and have a very good performance for games, and also future-proof.

I've heard that the i7, will rock, but also be full of bugs, so i don't know what to do.

So please.. you decide! I can't do it myself.

You gotta ask yourself just one question, do you feel lucky?

just kidding.

Ask yourself if need the cutting edge at premium price or buy Core 2 Quad after Nehalem is released, Core 2 price will go down.

Just a personal opinion, but I wouldn't go for early adoption.

Later steppings of i7 will fix bugs, probably reduce power consumption and be much lower in price.

Depending on what you do with your PC, I'd say a C2 quad would suffice right now.

None of the bugs will be show stopping, but neither will be the desktop performance.

You'll have to wait for the "tick" portion of Intel's Tick Tock Model.

glarsen84, what is your budget? If it isn't really high, then you can't afford an i7 so that would be a moot issue... except to wait for it to come out in case the other CPUs magically get cheaper. Reading all the rumors posted around here and elsewhere, that might be within the week or two. Then, may take a week or two for prices to "settle" unless it is a super hot seller, in which case it will take until demand drops.

Thanks for the replies.

Okay.. i have to wait for the 'tick' then, but this won't happend. I can't run Fallout 3, Red alert 3, and Farcry 2. which i would like to play asap.
My budget is $1500-$2000.. i think (12000 DKK)

I think you can build a very decent machine to play these games for 1.5-2k using current parts. if gaming is your thing then just dump more cash into g-card, that is the most important factor.

yah with $1500+ budget, you should be running 4870X2, GTX280/260 SLI or greater

2000 will also gaurentee you an i7 unless you get raped in taxes in your country.

ASUS P6T ~ gonna be priced around 300 dollars

i7 940 ~ 400-600 dollars.

Tri Channel Ram is even starting to flow in now like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231224

You guys sure you want him to get a yorkfield? :p

Makes you scratch your head now huh?

OP, the best advice, is hold off a bit, wait til NDA expires and i'll spank the board with i7 numbers if my replacement board comes in time. [if not the very latest will be P6T-DELUXE launch]

Or you can hit a website and watch benchmarks and reviews from other i7 owners.

then compare the two, and i'll show you guys yorkfield 4.0ghz and i7 X.Xghz and you can decide if i7 is worth it or not.

suprised no one recomended this..

i7 NDA expires next week. You'll have a lot more info to go off of then.

I'll be right behind you. Oh wait, that didn't sound right.

I didn't recommend anything earlier because glarsen84 didn't post a budget... but now he did. If he wants to experience games in all their glory, then I don't think a $1500 budget has room for a completely new computer that has an i7 in it, unless he wants to get a hugely expensive CPU but then go cheap on stuff like case and power. Think about it...

power supply for running multiple video cards $100-200 (good quality 750W and up)
decent case$50-200
multi-video cards $440-1000 (two GTX 260 or 4870, all the way to two 4870 x2)

It already is adding up quick, without going into a good storage subsystem for that level of a machine or better cooling.

Now, the upper $2000 limit is close to workable.

You've got to have optimized computing... OMGWTFBRAINWASHEDBYNVIDIA

Hey Aigo I know you aren't allowed to say when the NDA expires as that info is under NDA as well...but can you tell us when it doesn't expire?

For example, would it break NDA for you to tell us the NDA does not expire Nov 1, 2, 4, 5,6,7,8,9... etc?

;)

Yea, one card would be enough. A HD 4870 or GTX 260 would probably be enough for that resolution.

The NDA is NDA. Sometimes i dont even know the exact date.
I get an email from my sponsors labeled GO GO GO!

I have some bad news tho. My chips ARENT 965. so my NDA may hold longer. :X

Just found this out 2 days ago.

Hello,
while i'm waiting for the i7 benchmarks etc. can someone tell me the best chipset-gpu combination?
If i want a GTX 280, will a Intel chipset be the best, a nVidia 780i, or maybe something else? Stability and reliability is my first priority, and i'm also not an oc'er btw ;)

Thanks

your budget can include a X58 + 940.

Doesnt matter if your an overclocker or not, that will still spank a dualcore wolfdale.

If even a 920 on that chart is keeping up with a 9770 thats clocked higher, and has more cache, what do you think it will do to a Yorkfield thats lower clocked?

Last time i checked the price of a 920 was suposed to be on par with the Q9550 as well.

I don't see a big difference in games, except for the SLI reviews, and i'm a 1-GPU-person... AFAIK (from the reviews) the i7 is as fast as a dual/quad in games pr. mhz. but i see it owns in alot other stuff, and might be more futureproof.

The price for a 940 in denmark converted to USD is $718 (cheapest possible and 25% VAT included), and the board goes from $440-$500..
Ye, i see the price for a q9550 and a i7 920 is almost the same ($370).

I would love to own a i7, and if it wasn't for the rumors about it's release in November, i would have bought a q9550 months ago... I'm just afraid i will get a unstable aplha-system, like i did with my P4 just after it's release.
