So I recently got a pretty decent summer job and will no doubt have some money. I am thinking about upgrading my computer, but I am afraid that the day after I upgrade, it will become obsolete. here is my current setup now

some ECS board and xp1900+
768MB pc2100 ddr ram
ti-4200 128mb graphics card
250 gb and 80gb hd, not sata

You're afraid a computer will become obsolete? :Q

That's better than my computer. Do you really need an upgrade?

That depends, do you really need the upgrade? For what I do that system would serve me ok although some games I play would be pretty harsh on it. I'd say that unless you're really into gaming I'd just leave it as is with perhaps a RAM upgrade since that would be pretty cheap. If you're heavily into gaming though you're looking at upgrading the CPU, RAM and graphics card along with possibly the motherboard.

Keep the HDs upgrade everyhting else 64 3000+ 964 are going for cheap and give you room for future upgrades.

like they said... unless you're a gamer (or perhaps do a lot of CAD or graphics rendering), it's going to be a long time before your computer is obsolete. Of course, it's already obsolete by the standards of the people who shell out thousands of dollars needlessly so they can brag they have the latest and fastest computer. And, it's already obsolete by the standards of the people who want to sell you a new computer.

However, I've said it before and I'll say it again. 90% of computer upgrades are pointless. The majority of people do little more than email and a little bit of web surfing. My inlaws are about to upgrade, because their 1 GHz machine is "too outdated and slow" to surf the internet on. I say, it's far faster than they need. It's just "broken" because it's so full of viruses and spyware (again.) But, my advice won't be taken and 2 years from now, their latest computer will slow almost to a halt because of viruses and spyware, and again, they'll need to upgrade so they can read their precious Fwd:fwd:fwd:fwd:fwd:fwd: emails, surf to the cards sent to them online, and play solitaire.

What about a:
1.2ghz Tbird
Biostar M7NCD (replaced an old Epox 8K7A that died)
512MB PC2100
ATI Radeon 9600pro (replaced a GF2pro that died & killed the mobo)
40+160GB HD + 120GB external

I do a moderate amt of gaming (flight sims & FPS), and a good amount of work in MATLAB/Maple...which are currently raping my RAM useage.

edit: if I upgrade, it'd be to 1GB RAM + faster socketA CPU...don't have the $$ for a P4 or A64 system
