I have a friend who's having some confusion with installing the memory. There are 4 slots for memory, 2 vertical and 2 horizontal. Asus also includes what they call "C Rimms" with them which seem like terminators. How exactly should the dual channel memory be installed in this? Is each pair of memory slots (pointing in the same dir) a bank and I should put memory in them in pairs? What about the "C Rimms" are they neccessary?

You have to have each channel populated with at least one RIMM. Each pair is a bank. You must install them in pairs. If you have two, you must place one in each bank, preferably in the slot closer to the CPU, and place a C-RIMM in each ot the farther slots. Two came with the board so that shouldn't be a problem.

Hmmmm, why are the C Rimms needed anyway? Do they limit overclocking? Would it work without them?

I just got the P4T533-C with a P4-2.53 and 512 MB of Kingston PC1066 RAM running and I'm having a problem:

After I shut down my system through Windows shut down and turn it back on, my monitor never initializes and the light remains amber. It also seems as though there is no hardrive activity. After I hit and hold the power button for about 4 seconds, it shuts off the "hard" way, I turn it back on and everything works fine again.

Have you had similar problems?

For your question, there is a diagram in the manual that shows the ideal way to install that memory. I can't remmeber it now but the picture is pretty explicit.

The reason for CRIMM's is because of RDRAM's technology. That's just the way RDRAM works. I can't remember at the moment why but does it limit ocing? no. And will it work without CRIMM's? No.

I believe that the 2 paris one pair is for the 1st channel and the other pair is the 2nd channel so I believe you would put the 2 sticks of RDRAM in the first slot of both pairs (ie the left most one on the vertical pair and the top most slot on the Horizontal pair) and then put 2 CRIMMs in the other 2 slots.

I just got the P4T533-C with a P4-2.53 and 512 MB of Kingston PC1066 RAM

PLEASE; someone tell me where to find those components for sale?

I've been waiting for that Asus board and that memory for a long time, and am unable to locate a supplier.

EDIT: OK, I just found them at NewEgg; but my problem is I didn't want to build this rig myself. MultiWave builds custom rigs and has pretty good prices, but is slow in getting these items.

Anyone know a place that has these components that will build the rig for me?

Thank you,

Terrapin

Try pricewatch.com. Otherwise, I know gamepc.com has the memory, and corsair has their PC1066 on sale also. Should be able to find that board many places.

rdram is a serial technology
ddr is a parallel technology

you cant have a continuous chain with one of the links missing
crimms are "continuity" devices to terminate an otherwise open circuit.

and i'm sure there are lots of people here who would be happy to build a system for you, for a very fair price (near to where you live)
