To those who like to make personal websites

Please remember that companies search that stuff out. Frequently it's not helping you get a job.

A couple of stories from just the last couple months...

Found a webpage where the applicant was bragging about how he eluded police on a high-speed chase. The page isn't there any longer, but Google had cached a copy of the page.

One applicant had a myspace page where one of her interests was "party all night, if I have to sleep, I'll sleep at work." She didn't supply her myspace ID, I just looked to see if there was one using the same name as her gmail address. There was, and it was the same person.

Another applicant listed previous experience at an engineering firm as a part-time programmer while finishing school. His school-based website has a page where he says he was a PC tech there.

I just moved on to other candidates, I didn't ask for explanations.

I personally might not hire them because it doesn't show much intelligence to use the same email address for their personal page and for the job application.

It's unfortunate you didn't have the opportunity to tell those people to their face why they were passed over. Would have been priceless.

heh yeah. people are stupid and think what they put on a personal page won't be found out. We had one guy stealing stuff from the shop and selling it on Ebay. He was useing his personal email wich he also used for work. so it was easy to prove he did it.

There was an article in the paper today about UF browsing the facebook profiles of potential applicants and using that as additional qualifying criteria.

What the hell is wrong with you people?

So the whole "If I have to sleep, I'll sleep at work" thing....that can't be a joke? You're disqualifying people because of a personal website? What an asshole.

It can be a joke, it's also possible that it's not. Why take chance on someone that you already have your doubts about when you can hire someone else who you have no problems with?

Do you sleep at work?

😛

Lots of companies are now searching myspace on a regular basis. Is it ethically correct? since myspace claims to be able to get into the myspace environment you must supply a school email address etc. However, my opinion is that if it is there and can be easily obtained then its just being resourceful.
BTW, Multiple email addresses FTW.
Business Email
Work Email
Web sign up Email
Personal Email

What I'm saying is the page creates doubt.

Well of course not.

Smells like discrimination.....I wonder the legality of that. I think you can only make hiring decisions based on a resume, an interview, and a background check from a certified company.
