To those that had parents that immigrated to America

Im asking this since in the last few decades some of our parents came to america trying to find a good life for their children. Well now those children are grown up living in corporate america I always wondered what they felt about their parents hype to come to america. Was it all that was cracked up to be or would you have been happier living in your native country?

Taiwan - No I will not go back, 100+ heat, too hot for me 🙂 I enjoy the 30-40 of NYC. Its pretty crowded in Taiwan.. not bad for vacation, food is great but not long term living.

ditto, cept LA instead of NYC and 70-90 not 30-40

I love LA, you'll never find more variety elsewhere...

Yes, all you damn wanna-be Americans need to go back to your HOMELAND and stay thar!

RACISM FTW!!!

(I'm only kidding of course)

India.. nice vacationing spot, but I really don't see myself settling there... ever. I moved there for 7 years after grade school so I know what its like.

Despite all its flaws, America, IMO, is the best country on earth.

They are still here so apparently it lived up to the hype.

Edit: My grandparents came straight out of sicily. The other set from poland.

Indian parents here, I'd consider it because many of the values just can't be found here and having kids here with indian values can be hard it seems looking at some of my friends. In the future I'd definitely at the very least like to spend more time there, we visit every 2-3 years but I'd like to spend at least a few years there at some point.

Even though I was born here, I still get some kind of feeling of being back at "home" - probably doesn't make sense, but I like it. Just fyi, from New Delhi.

Hong Kong, my parents would love nothing more than to retire there. I was born in America however so for me personally I wouldn't be able to last out there. I'm not as fluent as I'd like to be in cantonese/mandarin.

Same here, except I'm in Southern California. Taiwan is fun to visit, but I definitely can't live there.

True...but I wouldn't even go back for vacation. Haven't been back in several years, and I heard it's much nicer now, but I still refuse to go.

So, what you're saying is that:

Indian Values > American Values?

Taiwan, sure, i'd retire there. good food too, i should be able to afford a house in a not so crowded area... perhaps my own private hot spring? big air conditioner for the house of course.

for a small island, there are a lot of people from taiwan in usa.

Well, I'm 3rd generation on my dad's side and something like 5th generation on my mom's side, so I can't really comment. However for my ethnicity mix I'll chime in:
Lithuania: Visit maybe, but not live
Germany: I've visited before, I like it. Not sure if I'd live there though.
Poland: Visit only
Ireland: Visit only probably
Other: God only knows what other European stuff I have in me. It's very possible my mom is a product of an affair and it would throw off some of the stuff. Either way I'm a classic American mutt.

I think he just means they're different, or at least that's what I got from his post.

My Armenian mother, who was living in Lebanon because she did not like Communist Armenia (USSR), left because of the civil war that broke out over there. There is a big enough Armenian community here in Southern California, that I don't really feel like going there is necessary. 🙂

My father, on the other hand, is Greek, and lived there until he was 20. I would definitely pick Greece instead of America. 😉

Hong Kong. I might move back after I finish my final quarter if I can't find a decent job or get into the graduate school.

And you are a native, from an apache tribe  Or did your forefathers migrated to USA from Europe a couple of generations ago?
(I'm only kidding of course)

Pakistan. Parents migrated a couple of years ago. Not sure if and when to move back, maybe in ten years to give the next generation a bit of a training of the Pakistani culture...

My parents are from Seoul, Korea and had I'm born and raised in Los Angeles. My parents divorced when I was 6. Dad said he hated living in america and left to Seoul and made millions. Mom stayed so I can finish school. Mom left to seoul also after I finished college. So now im left here with no family thinking, did I just get screwed? I have visited Seoul many times and it has changed alot in the last 10 years and is a great city. The weather and the over crowdedness may be bad but it may make up for the girls :wink;

Alot of Koreans like me also moved back to Korea. But since they went to school here all they can do over there is teach english. The money is'nt bad but there isnt alot of other things they can do.

Taiwan is really crowded, and a lot of Taiwanese that move here are pretty wealthy and easily fit into the upper-middle class lifestyle. A few of my cousins came here from Taiwan to attend university and/or to avoid serving the mandatory military service. Areas in SoCal like Arcadia and Diamond Bar are filled with rich Taiwanese immigrants.
