Right, so this is something I've been meaning to do for an entire year but for whatever reason, I've been putting it off. So now it's become my New Year's resolution.
Some background: I live in LA, in Glendale, near Hollywood to be exact and I'm one of those struggling actors you read so much about. I have a BA in Theatre and I substitute teach when I'm not making enough to get by with whatever gigs come along. I despise waiting tables.
That being said, I've always been very good with computers, customers and explaining the problems with one to the other (hence my membership here amongst the cream of the nerd crop). I won't get into my experience because that's not important for this post (I'm good, I swear to God. I've done tons of troubleshooting for consumer end users it's not even funny. Well, maybe a little funny). That being said, I'm going to start up a little business on the side to help make ends meet and I have a few questions to anyone who may do this or something similar.
1.) As far as data security goes, we all know that crazy shit can happen and data can get lost. I'm thinking that I would need some kind of waiver that the customer would sign releasing me from any responsibility in regards to their data. Of course, I would offer to back it up beforehand (for a nominal fee, of course). Is there a place I can get some kind of boilerplate agreement online.
2.) As far as pricing goes, what's the going rate for in home troubleshooting/repair/consulting? I'm looking to shoot well below that, simply because my lack of certs and the like (which again, I'm hoping is going to be part of my appeal. Trust me, it'll work) so what do ya'll charge.
3.) I've got a local phone number and I'm working on my website (thanks OSWD) but I may or may not need a DBA. Your thoughts?
Cliffs:
1.) I need a data waiver for customers to sign in case their computers melt under my care. Where to be finding?
2.) What do you charge for in home? I want to charge less than that.
3.) DBA? Yes or no?
