The do it so you cna get uninterrupted (ie: no repeats etc) stretches. It started with prison Break IIRC. Personally I love the idea, though I'd rathter just have a 30+ episode season of many shows.

Ya...much better than having a repeat thrown in every other week.
 
With the amount of money they pay some of these people they should be weekly like 24. Who was the brainiac that came up with 13 episodes a year in the first place? It's like the electoral college vote, outdated.
