To the people with pet(s), did you buy or adopt?

Sometimes it can be hard to find a dog with the right personality. There are a lot less dogs at the adoption center than cats. Both of my cats are adopted.

The first Cat I had I got for free and it was an awesome cat. The second cat I got for 15 bucks and he is nice also. I wanted to goto the local animal shelter but man yuou have to jump through so many hoops to get an animal it treally sux.

Some people buy because they want a purebred or whatever. You're not as likely to get one through adoption....at least not verified.

We adopted our three cats from my sister when her cat had a litter. I really didn't want to but my wife fell in love with two of them and we took the third out of pity because she was going to be left by herself.

Adopt? I hate that word when used in this context. My wife was adopted by her Mom and her Dad. My dog on the other hand was rescued.

We did not adopt our dog.

Edit-I guess since it cost us $60 to the SPCA where we picked out our dog you could say that we purchased her.

I adopted a dog, but she dug a hole in my fence and ran away - never found her again. My cat, though, was a stray that my family took in and gave to me 🙂

adopting is usually not the best pick of the litter... and usually older/bigger dogs. we got lucky when we saw a 2year old pomeranian at the pound. We had to show up at 6am Monday morning to be first in line.

I dunno... adopt works fine for me... we treat them as members of the family. They get to go on vacations with us, eat pizza with us, etc.

that's just PC. do you think we shouldn't use the "master" and "slave" to describe the hdd?

You feed your dog pizza? I almost never feed my dog people food and we NEVER feed her at the table. She gets scolded when she hovers around and begs. I hate it when dogs do that.

My wife and I bought our first (and current) dog because she'd never had a dog before and was a bit nervous about it. So we decided to get a pure breed with fairly predictable traits and behavior. It worked out very well in that regard too.

Next time we'll probably get another dog of this breed since we love it so much as well as shelter dog (so they can each have a buddy.)

first dog was found by dad (mix of a chiwawa and something else). Second dog was given to us by a teacher who could no longer had time for the dog (black lab). Third dog was bought (dalmation). Fourth dog was bought (pug). Fifth dog was bought (yellow lab)

Hell no. I could care less about that.

I just think it is a stupid word to use for a pet. As though you have anywhere near the responsibility or obligation to a pet as you do a human. I like rescued...that is what we say when we refer to how we acquired our dog.

PC has nothing to do with it. Semantics does.

If you buy from a registered breeder that you know is very responsible and not just spitting out dogs strictly for the money, then that's fine. If you buy from a Pet Store, you are just fueling the puppy mills that abuse dogs to crank out puppies just for profit. I would always go to the Humane Society or local Rescue society for a dog unless the breed I wanted was too rare and a breeder was the only way.

But just be sure you research breeders so you are getting a good one and not a sleezey one.

My fiance's family adopted all 5 of the dogs they've had (2 passed, 3 living), and when we get a dog we'll be adopting one from the pound as well.

Adopted. She has one of the best temperments I've ever seen in a dog. Owners were getting a divorce and neither wanted her so she went to the local animal shelter. Why anyone would ever give up a dog as sweet natured and good around children as our pooch is I'll never know.

I purchased a German Shorthair Pointer for hunting and as a pet for our family. You simply can't get a good hunting dog in many occasions by going to a shelter and adopting one. 🙂 You get what you pay for. 🙂
