To the people who work in office cubicles...

I was walking through an office at a client?s site today and witnessed the environment firsthand for the first time. I think I would have a mental break down if I were to work in such an environment. :Q

My cube area is only 6 cubes. The areas with 100s of cubes are a little awkward, conversations flow too freely to too many people.

in S. Florida it's not uncommon to have those in the $100-150k range to be in a cube.

That said not all cubes are equal. I am in a 5' walled 8x8 cube.

16 "cubicles" here. But they're built-in and fairly nicely, none of that gray (grey?) clip-together-like-lego-blocks crap.

I would be freaked out if I worked in one of those huge call centers with hundreds of cubicles.

wow, got an example of someone who make $150K/year and works in a cube (besides an elaborate MLM)? What type of work do they do? Do they actually "work" in their cube or is it more like homebase?

Work environment must suck, right?

Nope. I sit at the end of the isle on the second floor and have a huge 20'x10' window to look out of. Mornings are quiet which is great. I get a ton of work done. Afternoons are a riot. I "paid my dues" working outside in all weather conditions for many years - I like working in an office now.

imagine the same environment but without the cubes... just a bunch of desks and computers really close to each other. to me that would blow. the walls are a welcome seperation from the people you work with.

It really depends on the people surrounding you. Some office environments can be pure hell, but the same can be said about almost any work environment. It can be good or bad. I've worked in some call centers that were very annoying, but it was also partly because of the nature of the business and the business being sketchy as well. Now I work for IBM and the work environment is 10x better than my previous office jobs. I honestly can't complain, pays more, the people seem to be cool and they don't seem all stressed out. The stereotypical hell-hole office environment is hell, but they really aren't all like that. Honestly, I probably wouldn't believe me if I hadn't seen my current job for myself.

I've worked various types of jobs, outside as well... and it's not necessarily better just cause it's outside! There can be just as much drama, and you're subject to the weather.

I suppose the cubes I witnessed today were quite densely populated, so that made it appear even worse.

I?m classed as mobile, so my environment changes frequently.

the cube environment we're moving into (from a lab environment) is actaully a bit bigger and it's divided into sort of a largeish room.

Maybe you were in a call center of some sort? Those folks tend to be packed together like sardines. I sit in a "standard" office cube with a u-shaped desk with overhead cabinets on two sides. The cube is 10' by 15' and I have plenty of desk space and floor space to move around.

Pretty close to the same thing here. I'd say my cube is about 8' x 10'. I like to refer to my cube as a double-wide 🙂

I did the mobile thing too. There are differences and some things I like about this job some things I don't. I will tell you that being in Michigan I did not miss having to drive and trudge through the snow and general crappiness the last couple of months

THe cubes in our building are not laid out as a "farm" No 2 cubes are the same size and they are all jumbled around.

Then again, we don't have that many employees.
