I've been out of the handgun loop for the longest of time, but now interested in getting a semi-auto DA 9mm pistol as a hobby and maybe for self-defense.

In your experience, what would you recommend, and why...

Thanx in advance.

On a budget, the CZ75 line or the Ruger P series. They are hard to beat value wise.

Not on a budget, SIG or HK.
My personal preference leans to SIG.

I would agree with the above!

OK, thanx, I'll look into those.

I heard the Ruger P series is renowned for its sturdiness, but what about its accuracy, BTW?

I currently have a P89T and the accuracy is good, IMO.

The Rugers have been dead on reliable in my experience.

I have a ruger P90 (.45), and my dad has a ruger p89 (9mm), But where aprox. $300 in price when we bought them new IIRC. Both where EXECELLANT Shooting guns right off the box both with target ammo, and cheapo plinking ammo. For the price you can't go wrong, and yes I would also recomend .40 against 9mm for carrying.

I think most people would perfer a smaller carry piece, as the Rugers are a tad on the large side.

If I had to pick a carry pistol it would be a SIG P239 in .40 S&W or .357 SIG
Those are very fine carry guns.

But the XD is like a glock, it is a safe action style pistol, not a DA like he asked for. I would recommend a glock over an XD anyway, I have used both and the glock is a far better gun IMO.

Much appreciated, and what do you guys think about the Glocks?

Edit: didn't see AMDman12GHz's post above.

It all depends on the person, if he is an average sized person I would also recommend the P239 in .357 sig, That is what my dad has and it is a very nice gun. But it he is a larger guy, he may perfer a bigger gun to carry, the P239 may be to small for his hands, It all depends on the person.

Just take these guns mentioned into consideration and go look at them and compare them and see what fits you best.

I have a glock 17 9mm, Its a pretty accurate gun, light weight, and reliable. Mine has shot EVERYTHING I have put through it flawlessly, not matter if the gun is clean or not, no jams, nothing. I like my glock, and would like to get a larger caliber than the 9mm sometime in the near future.

They are very reliable.

That is about all I can say since I am biased against them.:p
I never cared for how they felt in my hands and I could never get settled well enough to shoot decently with one.

JMO.

My dad was the same way, he never liked them and when I went to get my 17 he tried to talk me out of it. But after I got it he shot it some and actually like it now (Doesn't love it, but thinks its a decent gun for the money, he still wouldn't own one though he says). But yea a glock is one of those guns where you either love it or hate it :p.

Is it because the Glock feels a tad too light compared to other semi-auto, or is it something else?

I can't comment for him, but I will tell you even though my 17 is only 9mm, it has a helluva kick for a mm gun because of its lightweight, way more kick than my fathers heavy p89. But that doesn't make me dislike the gun, My fathers reason for not liking them was how the gun felt in his hands, he doesnt like any of the polymer gripped guns. He also didn't like the safty functions on the gun, until he actually got out and shot one.

The CZ75b is a world-class pistol at an unbeatable price. The ergonomics are excellent, it's extremely accurate and as reliable as anything else made. It just feels good in your hands. It's all steel, so it's kinda heavy for carrying - and it typically takes 300-400 rounds for the trigger to smooth out at first. But after that it's very nice.

Personally, I prefer the Sig 226 because the trigger has a cleaner break to it and I shoot it a little better than the CZ. It does everything well and is beautifully made - for me it's the ultimate combat pistol. It's a pretty expensive gun for a newbie, but you sure wouldn't need to buy anything else. You will anyway, because guns are like that, but you wouldn't NEED to.;)

The Glock 19 is also an excellent pistol and will do pretty much everything the other two will - plus it's totally indestructable and brilliantly designed. But the grip angle is strange, and it's very difficult for me to tell when the trigger breaks, and I don't shoot them well. But there are plenty of guys out there who do. Rent one and see if it's for you.

It is hard to describe, the pistol just never felt right to me. Most likely a combination of weight, grip shape, and recoil characteristics.

Yea isn't it the truth, you get what you need and then after that it seems like your lacking something, so you keep buying thinking you will finally be content, but it seems like the more you buy, the more you need to complete your collection :p

I've always disliked Glocks (and similar semiautos) because they are, IMO, extremely unsafe to carry with a chambered round.

Give me a good old DA pistol any day.

I see, then it may take a little longer to get used to using a polymer handled handguns, and at the same time they're easier to carry around, because of its lightweight...

While I usually do perfer a manual saftey, that part doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I'd have better luck throwing a Glock at someone than hitting them with a round.
