To shut down or not to shut down, that's the question ....

okay bad shakespeare I kno ...

but my Question is :
What is better for the life length of your computer components ?

shutting down every day and booting back up every day (or using hybernate) and thus having the bad effects of shrinking and expanding everytime (I dunno how heavy this shrinking/expanding is and if it can even do damage but because youre letting your system temps from 15°C to 35°C every day and yer proc temps from 15°C to 50°C every day there has to occure a decent amount of shrinking/expanding)

or

letting the computer on all the time ... (with only screen off and harddisks off (trough the power saving options)

thanks for any help

I leave my computer on 24/7 (except when upgrading or working with its components).... in my opinion, if you think you have to use the computer again within 4 hours, then don't shut down.

no ...

anyway my main reason for posting this is because I want my system to have quite some lifelength cous I want to "recycle" most components when upgrading (my mobo supports the XP so no reason to change that when upgrading, and my 3Dcard can go on for a while ..)

My 386 still works.... my 486 worked until last month when I cannibalized it for parts and tossed the mobo in the trash 😉

<< whether it was posted or not, how the hell is this highly technical?...it's not even lowly technical. >>

hmm, it isn't really. maybe i should check what forum i was in before replying 😉

this IS not highly technical but I dont think anyone on the main forum has enough in depth technical information to know wether it is better to let yer components expand/shrink all the time or let them continiously on ....

geeze why are u guys such a$$holes...if u dont wanna answer his question then dont...who cares "where it belongs"...its not like its the end of the world every time someone posts in the wrong forum....and so long as u dont post to it its not gunna stay on top....
Anyways that rant being over...I don't think it hurts to run a computer on all the time. I've had a laptop that was used like a server for a year and it hasn't affected it preformance at all. Everything still works perfectly and the only problems i have had is with the hinges on the screen breaking cause sony has a bad design. Now that i have a desktop i leave it on most of the time with the occasional nightly shutdown...which hasnt hurt it yet.
As for turning the screen and hd off....i can understand the screen...but why the hard disk? if ur gunan leave it on all the time at least use it to search for cancer or prime numbers or alien life signs or whatever that cow one is...🙂

Exactly. Finally someone that shares my opinion.
