To Shim or not To Shim

P3 1.1 FC-PGA with an SK-6. It'll sitting on a slotkit adapter too. I don't lug it around to lan parties but it does get moved long distances a few times a year. My question is if I should order a P3 shim with my next cooling fan order, etc or just leave it be?
I hear lots of people suggest athlon XPs have nice standoffs that negate the need for a shim but low and behold, intel oem's don't have those.

Leave it be, a shim isn't necessary with your P3.

Same opinion here.

Hrm, why do people use shims with AMDs then? larger/heavier heatsinks and the possibility of shorting some of the connects?

Larger & heavier after mrkt HSF...& AMD is more fragile than Intel.

Some of the heatsinks used for AMD chips are very heavy (and are quite a struggle to get mounted on the chip). The cores of AMD chips also seem more prone to chipping.

when using a water block its a good idea to use a shim, also with old amd chips...the newer chips have a stronger core architecture and arent as prone to chipping.
