To sell my 2nd vehicle or to keep? That is the question

I own a 2002 silverado which is in great shape absent the coolant issue I posted a few weeks ago. This is a paid in full vehicle, and only runs on the weekends to go to the local hardware store or drop stuff off at Goodwill, no towing or anything =)

Because I don't really need it, and it uses gas like a pig, should I ditch it or leave it parked since it is still very useful and respected?

Current lineup,

2002 silverado 1500, 4x4 z71 (no loan)
1996 Saturn SL2 (main driving now, have been for about 1 year exactly, paid $0.00 for it, no loan)


Insurance situation is funny, I have a no accident coverage, just liability, medical, on the saturn, so if I get in an accident it is totalled and I get nothing back, but the truck still has a $200 deductable, liability, medical, etc. since it still has some physical value if it is wrecked, damaged.

$ isn't really that much for either vehicle at this point because of my age and driving record, and other discounts.


*EDIT< Don't really need the $, but would be nice to have the extra cash I guess, my opinion is to keep this vehicle since it wouldn't get much on the market and it could prove to be very useful for its purpose down the road
 
We're about to get a small used pickup (ranger, colorado, something in that line) for it's usefulness. We drive an Expedition, which does our towing, hauling, 8 people hauling (like yesterday), and it gets fine on gas (18.5mpg on highway cruising at 63mph). But the pickup bed is great, and when you need it you need it. My brother wants his own vehicle anyways, and he likes mini pickups, so that's what we're looking for.

Pickups are sweet, and very useful, and when you need them, the need just kind of comes from no where
Keep the truck

Keep it. You never know when you'll need a pickup, or just a second vehicle. Plus that Saturn seems kinda crummy. No telling how long it'll last. But the truck is in good shape.

Unless you need the money I'd keep it.
 
You won't get much for it. Trucks do not hold their value well in this economy and with gas prices as high as they were a year ago still fresh in people's minds.
 
I voted sell but since it's paid off you might as well keep it.

I'm considering selling my more expensive of vehicles so I could ditch the $350/month pmt and especially the insurance.
 
that's what i've been thinking too, it's just so nice to have, ESPECIALLY during the winter / camping trips. Saturn just isn't very useful other then moving my body to work. I've always been curious what other people do, my family was always a 1 car to 1 person household so it doesn't feel natural to own two vehicles
 
How often do you think you will need the truck? Compare that to renting one when you need it. Or is the Saturn capable of towing a small utility trailer? A utility trailer is usually easier to load and unload. Lower taxes and tag. Insured under the tow vehicles ins. At the cost of maneuverability. Whatever you sell the truck for now will likely be more than next year. And add the cost of maint., ins, taxes and tag to that. And if fuel goes up again the price may drop more.

I like having a truck it is all I have but I tend to need it for work. When I had more than 1 vehicle the others seem to require more maint. One or more always needed something done.

4x4's cost more and need more and seem to need it more often. (I've had 3 so far) I may have one again one day if I have a bad need.

If the Saturn is reliable and you can rent a truck or trailer(buy?). Lose the truck.
If not keep them both...

Old Saturns last forever if you check the oil often.

Sell the truck
 
There's always a third option, sell the nice truck and buy a beater truck. If you're just using it for weekend trips to haul stuff it would work fine and you don't need to carry any sort of collision or comprehensive on it because it would basically be a throw away vehicle. If it gets wrecked you just junk it and a grab another.

This is why god invented 1980s Toyota pickup trucks. They are indestructible. You can find a good one sub $2k and if your record is clean insurance will run you under $45 per month (I am 22yo w/clean record and that is my rate).

That would be my suggestion. A 2005 truck just sitting around losing value seems like a big waste to me. I have an 89 dodge caravan as my beater truck. Bought it 7 years ago for $800.
 
My opinion...I had a F150 parked for a few years and had to sell it because it didn't pass emissions tests. I only used it to haul stuff and tow my boat so I didn't feel bad about the rich exhaust. I would have cost more to fix it than it would to buy another one so I sold it. For the record, I wish I still had a truck.

When you don't have cargo space to haul boxes or cabinets or lumber, etc....you'll really miss having it. It's always more expensive to buy one later unless you luck out.

I have an old minivan that I got for $2k when I was moving cross country. It would have cost about $1000-1500 to rent a moving truck so I grabbed the van figuring I could sell it for about as much as I bought it for. The thing is too useful though, I haven't had the seats in it for the last year and just use it to haul junk around. I've used it to move around jeep engines, couches, other furniture, etc. It's cheap to own and insure.
