To receive long distance calls do you need long distance services?

I just cancel my services with AT&T and it seems that's what the customer service rep. implies. Inquiring mind want to know.

you dont even need long distance service to make them.. unless you had your long distance blocked.. you'll just get charged an arm and a leg

Nope, in fact, if you cancel a long-distance service, you can STILL make long distance calls, but it defaults to whatever carrier your phone service is contracted with for LD calling, and you'll pay a LOT more than with a contracted service.

Generally you still have to choose a long distance carrier to dial long distance (you don't have to have a long distance plan, but you do have to choose one). I refused to choose a long distance carrier on my home line and I am unable to make long distance calls except for toll free numbers, so I just use a calling card (or my cell phone the majority of the time) if I have to call long distance.

But in answer to the OPs questions, you can receive them just fine with local only service.

mine goes "this call is outside the 12 mile radius. you must have a long distance carrier to make this call."

Thanks for the fast answers. That settles my mind. Since we used our cells or calling cards for long distance calls, that is one service we don't need. Specially they change policies on us and charge us monthly fees. :|

Us Asians know long distance calling with calling card is cheaper (esp international). Hence if you ever try to sell long distance to Asians, you have such a low success rate unless they're stupid. Almost all my parents' friends have calling cards.

If you want to make calls across the country, use your cell damnit.

Who the hell pays for land line service other than local calling? It's a joke and I laugh when I see Vonage commercials.
