Hi.

I just bought a new 80GB hard drive for my computer to replace my old one.

Should I partition it? OS and programs on one partition and data etc. on the other?

I will be running Windows XP Professional.

Thanks.

It is a good idea to have a partition for your data if you don't have a backup routine.

Not if don't want to. Unless you plan on installing another OS I don't see why anyone would need to do that.

6-8GB for Oper. Sys.
Split the reset between a Programs and Data drive.

10 for OS plus apps and games rest goes on second! Best way is two have two disks one for OS and all programs second for data, for backup purposes.

I personally paratitioned my main drive for several reasons. I like having my data on a seperate partition when I have to reinstall the OS and I do a lot of encoding so I like put my finished video on the second partition on the main drive, there by keep the second drive clean for recording.

With Windows you have to create atleast 1 partition, it'll just take up the entire drive if you want.\

I personally keep my data away from my OS (on a seperate physical drive) because it makes it much easier to recover incase the OS fails.

I would recommend minimum 3 partitions...

One for the OS, one for the dates; one for the fine things we all call games.

<<info

The usage of the word "dates" was a poetic interpretation of the word 'data"
