Which CDRW is better in your opinion? Lite on 24x10x40 for $82, or Plextor same speed for $133. And does anyone know if the Plextor OEM version @ NewEgg comes with CD Burning Software?
Thanks for any help!

I'm gonna say TDK. Yeah, I know, it's not one of the choices, but I really like it. Besides, the CD tray is blue! That should be worth something! ;)

I currently have a 8/4/32A Plextor, and I've got a 24/10/40 Lite-On sitting in my post office box(oh, you shall be mine soon!).

Here's my take on it.

-Plextors definitely have good quality. Yet almost any burner you buy today will give you the same functionality and performance.

-Plextors are almost double the price of a Lite-On drive.

-Both drives are the same speed. Meaning that they'll both be obsolete in less than a year.

So using this as a basis for judgment, why pay almost 2x as much for a Plextor that will become obsolete at the same time as a Lite-On? I went for the "best brand" when I bought my 8/4/32 Plextor, and now I have a sour taste in my mouth after paying so much more for something that doesn't do anything different or better than a drive costing nearly half as much. Keep in mind I paid about $110 for my 8x Plextor about a year ago with a $50 instant rebate, now it is worth about the cost of a Big-Mac. Which is exactly 5 cents more than a similar speed Lite-On would be worth.

In the end it is your choice, but ask yourself if feeling warm and fuzzy about having the blue "Plexwriter" name on your drive is worth the IMO bloated price for the drive.

Oh btw, the Lite-On OEM drive at Newegg.com comes with an audio cable and Nero Burning ROM software. I think the Plextor is a bare drive(I was looking at it as well).

My vote's for Lite-On, as the Plextor does not offer any features that the Lite-On doesn't have, and I am a very satisfied Lite-On user (as well as Plextor user, though). With the extra cash, you can get a crapload of blank media :)

I vote for the Lite-on drive. I've had the 24X model since it's been out and have never had a problem with it. I have burned well over 100 CDR's @24X with no problems.

I just got the LiteOn from Best Buy and though I haven't used it very much, I am happy that I got it. Plextor is over rated over priced in MHO.

Good Luck

I'd say the Lite-on. IMHO, the Plextor just isn't worth the premium. Not to mention the fact that the 16x burner I got is top notch and hasn't popped a drink coaster yet.

The most looked-over drive on the planet.

Yamaha CRW3200

And this is why:

"Audio Master Quality Enhancement System This exclusive new Yamaha feature is designed to guarantee the best possible audio recording quality on conventional 74 or 80-minute CD-R disc. When Audio Master Recording Mode is enabled, the system widens the lands and the pits, significantly reducing jitter created during CD-R recording, improving audio and music recording quality to a level rivaling professionally prepared music CDs."

This drive is also faster than the "zone-clv" drives (plextor, tdk, lite-on).

They're so close in performance and quality that you can't go wrong no matter which you choose. What matters more to you, the Plextor name or the Lite-on price?

anyone recommend another respectable company besides NewEgg to go with? they don't have the 24x Lite-On OEM in tan, and black just won't do with a tan case :).

Thx

jeffrey:

Good take. Yamaha is the most overlooked because people got stuck with the idea that Yamahas dont have coaster protection and that P-CAV is slow. And AudioMaster isn't even the thing that makes them great.

Thanks.
They do get overlooked a lot, but now they DO have coaster protection software (Safeburn) and a buffer MUCH bigger than those other drives (8mb vs 4), P-CAV is now faster than the "zones" in 24X drives and I've already mentioned Audiomaster to make your cdr's sound even closer to pressed cd's.

I'm a current Plextor 12x owner, but if I had some upgrade money I'd go out and buy the Yamaha 24x without thinking twice.

I've made 2 or 3 orders with MWave (www.mwave.com). Their shipping and prices are usually along the same lines as NewEgg's. They also got a 5.6/7 from resellerratings. They only have a retail version. They also have the 32x LiteOn for $115.

You misunderstood me. What I tried to say is that people overlook Yamaha because they got stuck with the idea that Yamaha doesn't have coaster protection(back when they released 16x), and that P-CAV is slow(again demonstrated by their 16x). NOTE: I did not get stuck with that idea, so that's why I got myself a Yamaha. Also, coaster protection(Burnproof, JustLink, ExactLink(SafeBurn)...) is hardware, not software.

No, I got you LXi, but with the way your original post was worded I just wanted to make sure the record was set straight. That way people can start giving them (Yamaha) some credit for what they are doing.

Willoughbyva,

Question: ............... Was your LiteOn CD-RW drive from Best Buy re-badged as another brand?

If so, what was the brand name on the package .......... ?

Thanks for the info .........
