Just what this forum needs..... Yet another Hot Deals post that has turned into a "battle of the gamesystems". Take your rants to Off Topic please.
I would doubt that the PS2 price would drop so soon after Christmas. A lot of retailers are giving extended return policies as the result of early Christmas shoppers. Many people buy presents early, under normal return policies if you bought it in November you could not return it if the person didn't like it or if the product was defective, usually holiday return policies are more flexable and give you until the week after New Years to return.
Anyhow could you imagine if the PS2 price were to drop to $199 on the 29th? You would get mobs of angry parents and others trying to return their PS2's or get a refund for the difference. A PR nightmare for Sony. I do think the price will drop in the next few months though ( I would think arround February or March, right before the end of the fiscal year to drive up numbers).

I don't know why people think buying XBOX is like getting a PC upgrade.. Hello?? How old is PS1? How old is N64? and How old is DC? If you take the dates in proportion, how much in proportion are they selling EACH month? I totally agree that this seems like an awfully big price drop, but Return to Castle Wolfenstein was selling for $55 the first 2-1/2 weeks and then BAM!!!, it was $30. I got a AmEx Blue price adjustment, but how many peeps rushed out to buy it the first couple of days and either couldn't or didn't bother to get their difference back? Hmmm? Sony may be making a bold move thru ultra-aggresive pricing.
I'll edit the thread title to include the rumoured status of this, but it makes more sense than the "Voodoo 5s for a buck!!!! w000t!!!" frenzy that happened a few weeks back and had ZERO credibility. Was GQUnknown crapping in that thread too?

This would be a hot deal if this happens. It seems reasonable that Sony could drop the price after the holidays. It may depend on the volume of sales this holiday season. If I understand correctly, Sony (and all others) make most of their profits on the licensing of games. They can afford to lose money on the consoles because they make up for it with the software. I think that if the X-Box and Gamecube sales figures are high this holiday then Sony would be wise to drop the price to compete with the new systems. Just my 2 cents.

I'll believe the price drops when I see it. I really thought the $300 price for a PS2 was pretty exorbitant but the games are making the machine so heck, the price might be justified... but $200 is a great price and when it does, I'll buy.
But to give DefRef some credit, at least he made mention of _a_ source. I recall a certain member who was calling the recent RAM price increases a week or two in advance and when asked for his source, he basically blew everyone off with a "trust me, I know what I'm talking about, if you don't believe me tough for you." Real convincing, he was not.

I doubt very much that this is going to happen since I just saw at Slashdot.com that the Playstation2 was the best selling console of the Holiday season beating the Gamecube and Xbox. $279 is more reasonable.

Last I heard I think they were saying Halo would be out on PC in spring 2002. So yes, it will be coming out on PC. I hope when it does they let ppl with Xbox play against ppl with computers. LOL...remember when they thought about doing that with Quake3. Then they realized "Oh wait...ppl with the PC's would kick the living crap out of the console owners." Halo may be great on xbox, but that just means it will be way better on PC.

Personally, I recently fell victim to the "C:13 No Disk of Death" on my Sony DVD Player. One day out of warranty and Sony wants $136 to fix a known problem.

There is no way a reputable company like Sony will drop it's price on the PS2 so sharply. It took Sony 2-3 years just to drop the price on the Playstation. I highly doubt Sony make this move. And plus, I got my PS2 at Virgin Megastores! Even if they do drop the price of the console, they won't drop the price on the accessories and games.

And plus, the PS2 in Japan just had a recent price drop of about 15%. There's no way Sony would drop it at $100. 1/3 of the current price, NO WAY.

Sony products are generally crap in quality. Sony also has terrible customer service.
Microsoft and Nintendo have been known to at least back up their hardware, the same can not be said for Sony. The only worthwhile game I see on PS2 is MGS2.
