I accepted an IT position in a company in DC I moved from Salem VA to DC for this job. (infact my wife is still in Salem) My first day was 6/28/06. I got this job because at the time my parents were working there so I did side computer work for the company fixing the previous IT guys mistakes. When that IT guy left the president of the company called me up and asked me to come up. Told me I would get Double what I was making and a 15% bonus every year, plus a 10% raise every year.

Well my dad was the Vice President (mom was an accountant) he left because all the politics in the office. (President of company pokin fun with secretary, selling drugs on company grounds, etc..) Since he left the President made things extremely hard on my mother and I to even work in that office. We had found that he was advertising our jobs on careerbuilder.com, was taking resumes for my position, and even had the nerve to tell our web designer that they were going to be firing me and wanted to know if he wanted my position. (he of course said no)

About a month later, he fired my mother (his excuse was that she talked negatively about the company) the moment she was in the office packing her stuff. He pulls me into the office with the HR person and said that they want to keep me here but didn't want to make it uncomfortable for me to work there, they offered me 4 weeks pay if I left that day. I said no (I was expecting the 15% bonus in less than a month)

Things have lightened up because I am working on a program that they need (took the previous IT guy over a year to build it) I learned PHP and did a better product in 6 weeks.

2 months later...

I finally get that big bonus I was waiting soo long for, the bonus was only 4.5% (after taxes 2.8%) My wife and I are going through the hardest times of our marriage because of this job (I don't think we'll be married in a month at this rate) And now that the President has his program done that he needs he's been acting like an A$$ again.

I have always given atleast 2 weeks notice at any job I have ever left. I just don't feel I can stay here 2 weeks. How bad is it not to turn in the notice? I can get letters of recommendation from other managers in the office would that help?

And this program that they needed is internet based... Whats the legalities of me slipping code in there that if I don't log in once every 2 weeks it stops working? The web designer knows nothing about PHP so it may take him a very long time to fix it.

CLIFF NOTES:
1. Worked at a company with parents.
2. president of company, $crews secretary, does drugs at office
3. Dad left
4. President advertises my job on careerbuilder
5. fires mom on bogus charge
6. finally given bonus, less than a third of what was promised
7. Wants to move back to Salem, VA to be with Wife but not sure about notice time.

Sweet jebus! Why in the world are you still at that job? Get the hell out now! Go home and try to patch things up with your wife. The job certainly isn't worth loosing her over it.

Go home now, this job should definitely come second to family. You ahve built your resume up enough that you should be able to find something to do locally for at least an average pay check.

Get out. Be prepared to explain to future employers why you left without giving notice, but that shouldn't be too hard with that story.

I wasn't joking...

But we also need the money, we can't afford to live on what she makes. We're lucky if she brings home $500 every two weeks. The IT market in Roanoke/Salem is near impossible to get into because there's not many IT jobs there at all. We'll be homeless if we can't make rent payments. We've been living paycheck by paycheck because of problems in past and new problems popping up. I'm just really concerned about our finances if I leave.. The bonus is just enough to last us till the beginning of december, If I can wait 8 more days I can prolly last till beginning of Jan.

But if I give notice now the boss is the type who would subtract the bonus out of my paycheck so I really don't want him knowing I'm leaving. I'm stuck :(

Runnnn! He's trying to screw you and you're still helping him with things!? Your mom is gone, so you leaving suddenly isn't going to bring any wraith on her.

wife > job > bonus

you'll find another job. give notice and leave without burning bridges... at least it'll be a satisfactory reference... you already hit a much higher salary level with 2x what you were making before so when you find a new job you're already far better off than if you had stayed in salem

You have to do what you have to do.

It seems like you need to work to live. Keep on keeping on. Just trudge it out and make the best of a bad situation. You know, you can call the police on your boss if he's dealing drugs out of the office.

Would the letter of recommendations help use this as a reference... Maybe have future employers call the managers who wrote the letters for me?

You can't trust this guy one iota for a helpful reference and he has fvcked with you and your family.

Don't let the door hit you on the way and and never look back...

edit: i read a bit more and will add the following:

You owe this guy nothing. Work there as long as it takes to get the cash you need to keep you solvent and then blow... I hope you have already applied for jobs in Salem.

Something like that has been tried...

Before Dad left we had two employees come to him to make a formal complaint against the president and his secretary that they were doing drugs... Nothing happened to the president, but the secretary was sent home on paid leave from the corporate office.

He pulls everyone one-by-one into his office and interviews them to find out who turned them in. (he was told to leave it alone, but the secretary was threatening to goto his wife if she didn't get her job back) He eventually figures it out and forces them to write a letter stating that they didn't expect things to get as far as it did. They bring the secretary back with a bonus, and give the two people promotions and bonuses for writing the letter.

Your company is obviously not loyal to you. You are not obligated to be loyal to them. There is nothing morally wrong with not giving notice. They wouldn't give you a two week notice if they were firing you, would they?

Give notice, but make it contingent on how you are treated. If they treat you poorly you are out the door at 4.

Never burn your bridges.

Also the last question in my OP. What would happen if my program was to "stop working" after I left? ;)

Do you seriously want to run the risk of having to answer "Yes" on the "have you ever been convicted of a felony" question on job applications in the future?
