To get a GFD or not to get a GFD...

Ok, I am running my 850 rock stable at 1005mhz with a .1v voltage increase. I have been thinking about picking up a GFD, but I am curious how much faster I can expect to go. Is it worth the hassle of cracking the case? I am just afraid I will scratch the PCB with my luck. What do you guys suggest? Also, on a side note, does anyone else have a "classic" 850 with a silver back? Everyone I have seen has a black backplate. Thanks in advance...

unless you can get one for cheap, i would say no...

And you have to comfortable with opening up the case...

The only Athlons w/silver backs are T-Birds.

Incorrect my friend, my Athlon has a silverback and it has 512kb of L2 cache running at 2/5....Sounds like an "classic" to me...

I have seen quite a few Athlon Classics (including my own) with silver heatplates. They are usually the newer (week 17 and higher) CPU's.

You are doing damn well at 118 FSB, so I see no need for a GFD. Just wait till you get that PC133, and you really will be rolling.

BTW, check out these benchmarks running at 890MHz 1/2 cache totally stable with a 128MB stick of the Mosel Vitalic at CAS2 Turbo. I ordered one more 64MB stick of the Mosel from John, and will get another later. Not bad for the cache running at 445MHz.

Insane, one thing to consider is that I was told the cpu has to work harder if you change the multiplier. Click on this link and read one of the replies to a post I made at http://www.athlonoc.com:http://www.athlonoc.com/cgi-bin/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/000199.html.

So, you may have to up the voltage some to make it stable again. And then, the rest of your system will be running spec, so it'll be a little slower than it is now.
