To anyone who has the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1's, they have just released a new preamp...the CP-1. I am still trying to get some info from Klipsch about actual sound quality differences, but the main differences are as follows:

Upgrade features include:

Enhanced Direct Path amplifier interface for lower noise, crosstalk distortion, and amplifier compression.
Headphone jack for private 2-channel listening.
MP3/Portable Music Player input jack, with front L/R channel soundcard mixing function.
Speaker Engagement switch with two-color LED status indication (green/red).

You can get it here for $49+shipping.

Thanks Insane3D. I will be getting one of these. Headphone jack will be great for late night gaming, and the power button will cut down on the speaker popping for those rare occasions I have to power on the computer.

Hey Insane3d, I guess this sucker somehow fits on the bottom of your one control speaker??? How would one install?

Well, the old preamp is removeable. You just need to slide it backwards off the speaker. I am planning on removing the ones on my sets and mounting them with velcro under my desk surface. I am in the process of wall mounting all eight satellites so leaving them on the speakers would make it difficult to control them.

What do you wanna know? Speaker placement? Connection? Let me know. Here is a thread I discussed it in earlier...

O.K. the AE, in 4.1, has front stereo, rear stereo, & sub out. Each Klipsch set has front and rear stereo with NO POSSIBLE WAY, to my knowledge to isolate the sub for the AE sub out. Did you just hook up a "Y" connector to each stereo out on the AE 4.1 and crank up the base????

Well, I have been doing testing with a couple of connection methods. I first connected everything as follows:

1st Front Input from Promedia's ----> AE Center/Sub Output

2nd Front Input from Promedia's ----> AE Front Output

Both Rear Inputs from Promedia's -----> Both connected to AE Rear Output via Y-Adapter

AE in 5.1 mode

The problem that occured with this is with the center channel. It tried to use my left front satellite only as the center channel, and tried to use the right front channel as the LFE channel, so nothing came out of that speaker. I corrected this by connecting both right and left front speakers to the left front output on the sub. This worked ok, but it seemed a little off. I now have it connected as follows:

Both Front Inputs from Promedia's -----> AE Front Output via Y Adapter

Both Rear Inputs from Promedia's -----> AE Rear Output via Y-Adapter

AE in 4.1 mode

I just recently picked up the ADS 2000 AC-3 decoder from midiland and I have been doing some testing with it. So far, I prefer QMSS to DD 5.1 in the DVD's I have watched.

I hope this helps...

So your not using the sub out? Cool. I'm not either. Do you have the base cranked up?

No, the Promedia amp does a good job of filtering the low frequencies out to the sub. I actually have great bass with the sub knobs both at the lowest setting. For DVD's I usually do the THX level, but sometimes up to the 12 o'clock position, any higher my brain shakes inside my skull. Also, for a little tighter bass and to remove any port noise from the sub, try placing your subs port hole right up against something..you should notice a difference immediately.

Do you have your AE in 4.1 mode or 5.1 mode? Also, I have two subs, so that is most likely why I still get good bass at the lowest setting. When I only had one set, it was same with mine. I wouldn't worry. Try the port hole trick and see if it helps out.

Yes, I must agree with you. Just curious, did you notice your ProMedia's sounded different when you installed the Philips card? I noticed a fairly big change when I went from the SB Live 5.1 to the Philips. It seemed like the sound from the Philips was "cleaner". The Promedia's sounded shrilly and I had an audible hiss at most volumes. When I went to the Philips both problems disappeared and the sound was "cleaner"...to my ears anyway. Did you find any difference?

Ya I did hear a difference but its hard to isolate for me. Certainly the SBLive 5.1 Plat seemed to offer washed out sound at best in contrast to the Philips AE. Although the base is strong in my current setup after enabling the base control in the AE props and cranking up the base, I notice the biggest difference in cleaner and more accurate mids & highs. Perhaps the crossover seperation used in the Philips ensemble is more precise. You tell me... :)

hmm.. one thing i just thought of...how do you control the volume on the headphone out separately from the speakers? i would like to be able to turn off the speakers but leave the headphones on, but i would also like to be able to adjust the volume of the headphones too. also it would be nice to be able to have them both on at the same time, so i could use the headphones for really good sound and the sub for the extra bass punch.

What if you buy the promedias right now will they come with the new preamp? Seems like a big drag if they don't

I think my new preamp is busted :(
It has very loud hissing even when the main volume is all the way down. My old preamp had very little hissing.
Guess I'll have to give Amy an email.
