It seems a lot of biomedical engineers are premed and if it doesn't work out, they have a nice biomedical engineering degree to work with.

well, considering i've heard that engineering is the toughest area of school, i'd imagine that those who accomplish that definitely have the cojones to go to med school.

My best friend did chemical engineering prior to med school. My current gf sis is doing her pharmacy & is intended to go to med school after.

My g/f is majoring in Biochemistry and Biology with minors in Chemistry and Womens Studies.

Oh yeah, and she's somehow fitting that into 3 years. She intends to be an OB/GYN, in case you care.

EVERYBODY is a biology or chem major.
Distinguish yourself by being different from all the other applicants.
Try philosophy or english, and take the few science classes you need for the MCAT, bio, chem, organic, and Physics, during your four years.

That does work... i was a bio major before i went to EE... and that's one of the things I was advised to do if i had any thoughts of going to med school.

Also, tons of people in med schools have graduate degrees. I have many friends in med schools and they say a large percentage of the people have masters or phds.

If you're a bio or similar biological science major you're going to need a gpa very near 4.0 or else forget it, the competition is just that tight. The next highest group would be social science majors, a little less rigorous but around a 3.7-3.8 is pretty much what you need. Physical science majors would be around 3.5ish, and engineering usually has the lowest gpa's around for acceptance, 3.2 or so.

I'd recommend Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science). You get all the core science classes as well as experience working in a hospital, and dealing with patients. And if you decide not to go to med school (or get rejected) you can easily get a good paying job anywhere, since there's a shortage of clinical lab workers right now.

I'm a Canadian Premed, University of Toronto

Majoring in Genetics and Biotechnology, in my 2nd year. Marks are good enough so far, and I'll be writing the MCAT next year.

My fiance is currently in Dental school at UPenn but was initially considering going to Medical school. She was a pre-med and genetics double major in college. She said most people are biology or pre-med, but many more people are choosing different majors because you lack specialization in both of those fields and if you change your mind, finding a job might be hard. She said a lot of her dental school classmates were engineers or even math majors. So i think its quite varied right now.

I'm majoring in Econ and I plan to goto med school and become a doctor, all you have to do is take the med school pre req's and you can major in almost anything as a UG.

My sister got into the "direct-med" program (MCAT score doesn't matter, and its supposed to take 3 years for premed instead of 4 years...she finished premed in two years :Q

I have no idea what her major was, i'm assuming biology...i'll ask her, just in case anyone here cares :)
