To cool my AM2 Athlon 62X2

Bateluer

Lifer
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro

For the CPU, I originally wanted to go with the Zalman 9500 AM2 cooler, but a combination of cost and complicated installation procedures led me to the Freezer 64. I don't want to remove my motherboard to install a CPU cooler.

To cool the chipset, I am somewhat torn. MSI's little heatsink is pretty weak, getting hot enough to take the skin off your finger in the time it takes XP to load from a cold start.
I was looking at the Swiftech MCX159-CU 40mm chipset cooling, seen here

That should be adequate to cool the NF 570 chipset, or at least, far superior than the MSI cooler. As I said previously though, I don't want to have to remove the motherboard in order to install a cooler. The MSI board has the holes through the motherboard around the NB. Would installation of the Swiftech cooler require removal of the motherboard for for installation? I've never removed a chipset cooler before, so this will be my first time. (I've installed plenty of CPU and VGA coolers, process can't be too dissimilar.)

I was also looking at the Zalman NBF-47, but I have my doubts that it could cool the toasty nF 570 NB.

The Thermaltake CL-C0034 Extreme Spirit II is also a cooler I was looking at. It looks like it could cool very effectively, however, space constraints in my setup may make it impossible to install.

Lastly, I was looking at the Thermalright HR-05 SLI cooler, but it looks like it might be difficult to install with the dual slot X1900XT sitting next to it.

Constructive comments welcome.

The AC Freezer 64 Pro is a great choice for your chip, and you won't have to remove your motherboard for it. However, you will have to remove your motherboard to install any aftermarket chipset cooler. Also I'm not sure if the retention mechanism for the nForce5 chipset is the same as that of the NF4, so make sure whichever cooler you choose will fit. I have the swiftech cooler on my A8N-E, and it works fine even without a fan. I would go for the TR HR-05 SLI cooler though, as that probably cools better.

The HR05 SLI wasn't instock at Newegg when I looked, but it might be next week when I actually order.

Thanks for the reply though. I hate removing the mobo, such a PITA. 🙁 The heat produced by the NF5 makes the MSI heatsink get too toasty for comfort.

The Zalman 7700 would do a great job of cooling the CPU as well as the passive MSI chipset (MB voltage regulators also).

It doesn?t top the charts anymore but its performance is still very good while running very quiet.

The Zalman 7700 won't cool the chipset on this MSI board. The NB is located between the PCIe 16x slots, not next to the CPU.

The Freezer 64 adn Swiftech MCX-159cu are on there way and should be here early next week. Newegg was running a bit of a sale on the Feezer 64s as well, slighly discounted price and free 3 Day UPS shipping.

Should be a far superior cooler to the tiny Tt Spark cooler that I was forced to buy when I built this machine.

The Zalman 9500 AM2 attaches with a large clip & takes about 15 seconds to install if you take your time ... however it is expensive & pretty heavy.

Nothing wrong with the Freezer-Pro 64 either though.

i'm in concurrence about the freezer pro 64 for my am2 x2 4200+, pretty pleased with the reviews and price and i only oc to 2.5ghz. the stock cooler is noisy and altho temps are fine now when summertime comes...

i'm also looking for a chipset cooler for this gigabyte ga-m57sli-s4 however, nothing extreme (or extremely heavy), something like this coolermaster chipset cooler or something comparable. most importantly something that fits my gigabyte board 😉

any thoughts or recommendations?
