Should I even bother compressing my hard drive? It seems to me that it's not really warranted as storage space is so abundant these days. Still, just out of curiosity, in a Windows2000 enviroment, is there any real benefits or disadvantages to compressing modern hard drives?

Most modern media files have compression built in

You will not get much extra space unless you horde text files

Well, money is tight and I cant spend right now. Gotta get those debts paid off first! Was just looking for a quick and easy way to extend the capabilities of my current configuration.

Hard drives are becomming bigger and cheaper.....they haven't exactly got massivley faster though (although they definately have speeded up) so squeezing speed out of them is important.

Therefore, Not compressing sounds the best move because lot's of cheap space anyway and no slow down due to compression.

p.s: if you are short of cash, try hunting around for useless files, run a system cleanup, put stuff on floppy / cd-rs.

When I get back I've got a LiteON to install. Between the drivers and programs I've got stored I'll be looking at 10-20 Gigs that I didn't have.

Compressing drives doesn't make alot of sense now when alot of files are already in a compressed format and will not go any smaller(such as jpegs and mp3's). If you need more space, archive it or just don't use as many programs as you normally would. I wouldn't compress a drive even with a small hard drive.
