I wouldn't drive into DC, but the metro from West Falls Church to Farragut West is pleasant enough. About a mile from WFC, so I can walk, bike, or hop a bus a couple blocks from home.

I had to travel to Vienna for training for a week. Talk about a nightmare getting out of there at 4:00-4:30 :(

that's my commute :( (but I use backroads most of the time)

And yeah, the metro is nice (even from Vienna) I take it during the weekends when I feel like going to DC.

Before I dropped out of the commuting wars I was doing Manassas to 18th and F St NW which is just a freaking nightmare commute. Then I discovered the secret about the quickest of all the methods I tried over the years: The Horner Road slug line. There was actually 1 morning where my total door to door commute was 55 minutes! VRE, driving, Metro all of those were a guaranteed minimum 1:50 minutes each way and expensive to boot.

I commute from right north of Bethesda to Columbia every day on 495 then 95. Takes me like 20 minutes to drive 25 miles. Good thing I'm going against the traffic :D

wow, you guys are scaring me, lol.

I am moving to the DC area in a few months, and I will be working in NoVA, kind of near Tysons Corner. About how long of a commute would I be looking at coming from say Pentagon City or old-town Alexandria? Is there any site that has maps showing direction/flow of traffic in the DC area? I was thinking of maybe finding somewhere in Bethesda to stay since I am assuming I would be going opposite traffic (Bethesda to tysons corner).

There is traffic going into VA from Bethesda on 495, but it's not that bad. Sometimes there is none actually. My girlfriend makes that commute for her job. I also made that drive last week at 8:30am when I went to Kings Dominion and we didn't hit any traffic at all.

I use this to check traffic when I leave work to see if I should go highway or backways.

Not sure if VA has something like that but I'm sure a quick google search would give results. Infact I'm pretty sure I've seen VA traffic like that too.

I normally go to traffic.com and check the cameras if the traffic looks unbearable I take the backroad otherwise I take 66.

Cities need more dedicated bike lanes. I would be too scared to ride a road bike here in the city as I've seen bikers get either completely plowed over or clipped by side-view mirrors too often (6 times in one month).

I work at the patent office in Old Town Alexandria. I prefer the metro because I don't want to worry about VA traffic. Takes me an hour and 15 each way but not much hassle.

However a few people I work with commute from MD and it takes them like 30 min in the morning and an hour and 15 min at around 4:30 in the afternoon.

I like taking the BART to the city. What's usually a 11 minute drive on an empty highway is something like an hour, so I enjoy my 25 minute subway ride that plops me 2 minutes away from my work =)

San Diego has bike lanes on many of its roads but there are still cyclists killed here from time to time. Still, I think dedicated bike lanes are a great idea and I'd like to see more of them on the roads in all the major cities in this country.

I live outside of Atlanta, which is probably as bad as DC, but probably on a much larger scale (more spread out) It takes my wife 60-90 minutes to go the 24 miles to work at 10 in the morning !

When she used to work downtown, which was only 10 miles farther away than she travels now, it could take her anywhere from 2-2.5 hours to get home. Atlanta rules!!! Keep moving here you bastages!!!

Peace

I am tryign to get from one suburb to another far suburban area seperated by a few rivers, some lakes and a few herds of various animals...

Going to DC will be painless compared to my daily commute to annandale....regardless of the route I take

Commute wasn't bad today...took the longer albet simpler and much more comfortable route

friend gave me a ride from annandale to alexandria metro, then VRE to manassas....friend gave me a ride home (like 3miles away)....

even then, it would have been 1 bus, 1 train, and a 3 mile walk

Back when I was going to college in Philly, I was coming from Central, NJ. It took my car about a good hour to get to the train (PATCO) and then it took the train 25 minutes to get to my stop. I woke up at 5am almost every morning to make that commute and sometimes came home at 12pm. Somehow I still made Dean's List.

M25 was shut on the way back from J8 to J10 so I had to go on some A and B roads. 4 lanes of traffice go on A and B roads = it took me 2.5yrs to get back...very very poor!
