I would laugh my ass off if Florida was a tie. No precedents are set for what to do if there was one. I bet if there was a tie, Gore would claim he won because he may win the popular vote. If the shoe was on the other foot, he say "run off!"

This is great, I turned off MSNBC, when they declared GW the winner
and showed his face on the White House with the title "43rd President of the United
States"
I turn the TV back on an hour later, and Gore had taken back his concession.
And now he's taken the lead in Pop Vote!!

Go GORE!!!

Well i've always said that I think the electoral college is a fluke. Looks like our votes in the Los Angeles area are pushing Gore into first place in the popular vote.

I think what was just said is critical...

Los Angeles pushed Gore over the top. Gore got a super-majority in several huge states. Over the rest of the country, he certainly did not get a majority. The popular vote is so polarized on the coasts that is is highly skewed.

The electoral college was created for just this reason. Our Founder's really were geniuses.

Fdiskboy. Are you saying that the vote of people in CA or NY should count less then those in Kansas? Just because a lot of people on the coasts are democratic doesn't mean they don't count.

<<The electoral college was created for just this reason. Our Founder's really were geniuses.>>

So that the population doesn't control and those little farming states like wyoming actually have some power right? Get real, the electoral college made sense when it took someone an 8 horse ride to vote.

If Bush wins the election, he's gonna be the first prez since 1886 to win the election w/o winning the popular vote...that's gonna be very tough to shrug off.

California definitely pushed Gore over the top in the popular vote department...

1.2 Million more votes for him in California with $0 spent in TV ads...wow! :D

Keep those personal attacks coming guys, I love it.

The majority of the STATES voted Bush. So are you saying they count less because they have fewer people? If so, then why do we need states?

Check your history books and then decide. I realize a few of you, Red Dawn you in particular, think you are much wiser than Jefferson, Franklin and Madison to name a few. I'll of course beg to differ.

Also I'll note again here that small states are not going to vote to amend the Constitution by abolishing the Electoral College. Why should they? Voluntarily give up what little power they have in the national elections? Right. Dream on...

And flame on.

BTW: Supertool, I was in fact arguing the opposite. That a Californian's vote should NOT count more than someone from Kansas or Wyoming. As it is now, they have roughly equal weight, the way it should be.

I don't really feel like jumping into a discussion on the merits of the electoral college (yet, anyway ;)) but fdiskboy, I would like to say something about what you just mentioned:

<<I realize a few of you, Red Dawn you in particular, think you are much wiser than Jefferson, Franklin and Madison to name a few. I'll of course beg to differ>>

Whether the electoral college is a good thing or not, one thing you have to take into account is the fact that Jefferson, Franklin and Madison lived in a time that was GREATLY different than the time we live in now. There was no way for the people of the 18th century United States to be able to understand the presidential candidates as well as we can now. So the fact that they simply couldn't make an educated decision then is partly void now.
