To Build [Now] Or Not To Build...

So I'm in desperate need of getting a new build for college. I have the cash in my account, but my parents said they'd split it here in about a month if I wait.

Here's my dilemma, there's great deals out there. But with Nehalem's getting closer and the GTX 280+ and such, are current prices going to drop a bit in the next month or so?

I'm just wondering if I should build now, or build come late August.

With the ATI HD 4870X2 coming out over the next few weeks, and Nehalem getting closer and closer (reports are now the launch has been bumped up to November), I expect GPU and CPU prices to fall steadily between now and year's end.

Prices always fall. If you need the computer now, build it. If you can wait, you'll get more performance for your dollar in a month. It probably won't be a tremendous difference though, since prices have already fallen a fair amount.

I think I can hold out for a bit. College won't be that demanding just yet until about mid-semester.

Plus I'm just waiting for Warhammer Online 😛

What are expected retail prices of 4870X2? I know they'll fall probably $100 below the mark after a couple weeks, just wondering.

Regardless what happens to the market, it will be cheaper when half of it is paid for. 😉

Haha a very good point!

Well I'm trying to keep some kind of budget, under $1,300-1,400.

But true. I'm sure it'll start out at about $500 and then in two weeks will be at $400

If your parents will pay for half of it I'd build it now.

There's always going to be some hot new technology right around the corner. Prices are always going to fall. That is the way it's been since people first started building PC's 25 years ago.

Well the issue is that his parents will pay for half if he waits. Still, I'm with you. I'd take the free money when it comes.

Oops! Well, wait then. hehe

You won't need a HD4870X2 for Warhammer Online. A single HD4870 will easily suffice. And wait, of course ...
