To Backup or To Stream

Over the past decade or so, I have acquired a large amount of movies, tv shows. With the advent of streaming sites like hulu and netflix and various 3rd party sites. Does it back sense to backup the already acquired content or just stream it if I want to watch it at some point?

I'm thinking from the standpoint of it takes a long time to backup to Crashplan/Mozy/Carbonite etc and maybe there is no point anymore since it is typically readily available on the cloud. Without all the video, my backup could probably lose 1-2TB.

If I can't reproduce it, it gets backed up. That being said, I don't back up any of my TV/Movies only some of which I can reproduce via streaming or directly from disc. It's a gamble, but I wouldn't be heartbroken without them.

Why waste space storing porn when 1000 new scenes are shot everyday? No point backing that stuff up.

I always backup stuff. My internet can't handle streaming so that's why I rather download and have the file. Then I have it in my possession and it does not depend on the internet in any way or the other. The most likely thing I want to do if my internet goes down is watch a movie. Can't do that if the only way to watch a movie is streaming. :p

I think in general we're stuck right now in this awkward period between physical ownable media and everything streamed from the cloud with no real ownership of content. I think we'll eventually get the point where almost all of our data resides in the cloud but right now the thing that prevents that is our internet connection and content fees/restrictions.

I'm assuming you downloaded this stuff in some way so it would be harder to recover if you did lose the files. Although, if I ripped and encoded 1 TB of shows/movies, I'd sure as hell spend the extra $100 to copy them to another drive. Of course, I've got a Windows Home Server box so it's pretty easy to toss another drive in the array.

Backup. You can't rely on another company to hold(or provide a facsimile of) your data.

Also, lack of clear regulations, and affordable HDDs.

I prefer to back stuff up locally. I don't use any cloud storage solutions. Nor will I. If you want it done right, do it yourself.

That is a full thumbs up.. fricken i used to dl stuff all the time but i never go back and watch them again.. I can't believe how much new stuff is out every 10 min..

the only time I would save them if the internet dies and Ill need to pull out the saved contents :)

So far I keep two copies on two different drives. I could whip up a RAID server/NAS. But I worry about bit rot. I wish there was an easy implementation of ZFS available. But for $50/yr I feel like having that offsite crashplan would make me feel better.

I have a server with raid 5, then I also do separate backups to individual drives. A couple of the more important ones also go to a lock box a couple km away from my house. The extremely important stuff also gets backed up to my online server in Toronto area that is like 1000 km away. I'd backup everything there but when you have 1mb you kinda have to pick and choose what to upload. Most of the stuff is text based like email and source code so it's just a bit over a gig. Takes a couple days to do the initial backup then it's a couple hours every week. It's all automated so it's set and forget.

I prefer being in control of my data, I just have better piece of mind.
