Around campus I have noticed that most people of asian decent who have immigrated to the USA have a distinctive mark on their upper arm.

I have asked about it but all people see to know is that "It's the FOBy mark" and they all just got it when they moved here when younger.

Does anyone have any more specific info about it?

Be aware this is a very old thread.

yup small pox vaccination. In some of those countries the paper work was so bad that the only way to know if someone had gotten the vaccination was to mark their arm like that. My gf has one.

and a few years back, you're suppose to have it before you're even allowed in this country....

i don't have one btw, but that's what it is.

Why do they get them? I thought small pox was eliminated..

Yes, it has been, in the US. They're trying to make sure if it hasn't in some asian country, it won't be introduced.

Yeah, usually smallpox, but for the olders ones, it could actually be polio...my parents (most noticeably on my father, since he wears a beater around the house) have numerous scars from vaccinations. Granted, he might have other ones from being in the army back there.

Got any friends born in the states over age 30-31? They have the same scar (smallpox vaccination). They quit giving them here in the states around 1970-71 (I was born in March '71 and don't have one whereas my wife, who is 1.5 years older than me, does.)

Well that's not fair.

All the white people are going to be killed off and you will all rule the world when small pox comes back!

When I lived in Panama, almost all panamanians had them - including the kids I grew up with.

i forgot what injection/vacinnation it was, but I think I got the shot in 6th grades.
since I am sacred as sh|t to take the shot so I tried to squeeze my arm till it goes red so that the nurse will think I am unfitt for the injection :) it didn't work. :(

was it German Measle? I really forgot. after I got to the states I need one Tubercolosus and 3-4 Hepatisus B shots.

A few years ago, EVERYONE in the entire world had one of those scars as a result of a small pox vacination.
This eliminated all carriers of small pox.
People born after this, did not get shots.

I got a smallpox vaccination when I joined the military and it left a scar on my upper left arm.

They do not actually stick the needle in you like other shots. They just quickly poke you 2 times and that's it. It doesn't even hurt. It goes from 2 little prick marks to a dime size scab that will eventually turn into a scar. Doesn't hurt at all. Nothing like other shots where they inject the vaccine into you.
