to all the motorcyclists out there

Speaking from experience I can say you DO NOT want this to happen to you. Putting on a jacket/helmet/etc is not that hard. Having skin is a very nice thing.

A lid, gloves, and a jacket are a must.

Weird that most of the time, the next step of equipment people take after a helmet is a jacket. Studies have proven that most injuries occur to the legs/hands/feet.

I'm kinda guilty with this too as I ride to work every day with helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and kevlar jeans which still don't offer that much protection.

Wow, reading that story and seeing the pictures sent shivers down my spine. You never know what will happen out on the roads. And it seems drivers are becoming more and more distracted by things.

Leather for me all the way. Heck, a 5mph layover will leave some nasty marks if you're not protected!

Wow is all I can say ... I've had small patchs of road rash from various hard encounters with asphalt over the years but I can't even imagine somthing like this happening!

I see girls on the back of bikes every day dressed like Brittany was (often without even the helmet) & THEY are the ones that really need to read this article!

+1.

I'm glad to see that she got back on a bike. (and didn't become one of those crazy anti-motorcycle activists) It seems so strange that as bad as her entire story is, less than $1000 (the price of a computer) will buy you protection to avoid a situation like that entirely. But I still have to read about these horrendous road rash stories (I've had quite a bit myself before I bought the full suit)

While I'll tell anyone who rides , to get some gear to protect themselves. I had my first accident on a bike in 11 years of riding 4 years ago, and I absoltely destroyed my leg , and didn't walk for a year. I've seen my share of bad accidents and seen MANY MANY MANY riders. What happened to the driver? Was this some young inexperienced driver that got a chick on the back and went out to haul a$$ to show off. I hate those guys!
Granted , I wish our website , TiltedVisions.Com was still up to show off video and pictures of me and my boys out stunt riding. I'm just as guilty because I've got video and pictures of me rolling fast and slow wheelies with one of my girlfriends on the back. Granted , this was something we did a lot , and was the only person that I could stunt with on the back. I didn't have the "feeling" with anyone else back there.
Most of the time you see stuff like this it's people that haven't been riding long , and are out messing around without the experience to back them up.
Good to see she's back on a bike again that's a trooper.

good to see that you're ok. Are you able to run now? Jogging? biking?

Textile riding jackets are CHEAP, I don't know why more people don't wear them. Mine was only $100 shipped. Heck, Newenough has a Cortech jacket for $62 right now.

I just started riding and I badly need some overpants. It's the end of the season so I probably won't buy any, I'm being very careful on my bike until I find a pair I like. I've got a 36" inseam, so I don't have many choices. I don't really want chaps.

Ok tell me if I'm not protected enough..

Shoei Helmet
Alpinestar leather jacket with pads/protectors
Alpinestar kevlar knuckled gloves.

I guess I'll need boots and pants...

You're better than most, but pants and over the ankle boots will go a long way too. There's a MotoCast show about info for new riders, they talk about how jeans aren't much protection in the case of a fall.

If they have your size, NewEnough has FirstGear Fuel pants on closeout right now for $84. They're textile pants, with leather overlays on the hips/knees. I'm not sure if they'll zip to your jacket or not, but if they don't a tailor can alter the jacket easily enough.

I'll probably go with their HT 2.0 Overpants myself. They're $162, but I'm more confident they'll be long enough with my freakishly long legs.

I remember when the pictures of this girl were floating around, very cute! Even with the skin grafts. 🙂

Custom-fit Aerostich is the best money I have ever spent. I'd gladly pay twice as much for Andy Goldfine's fine work.

If you want something stylish, and not overpants here are some motorcycle riding jeans that seem to be pretty popular: Draggin' Jeans

They are Kevlar lined.

I'd have to be doing some serious riding to think about Aerostich gear, it's pretty pricy, but I bet it's worth it. That Roadcrafter suit looks amazing and seems like it'd be easily worth the $730 they're asking for it.

Those Draggin jeans don't look too bad, they even have my size. I'll probably go with overpants for most of my riding, the goal is to eventually commute on my bike and I'll probably be wearing the standard engineer suit to work (ie: khakis and a polo shirt)

Yea, I'll be one to say they're better then nothing, but even when I went down once at like 5mph, I still lost 1-2 square inches of skin where road gravel dug through the kevlar into my knee area. Pants looks good as new, but I still got some marks from like 5 months ago.

Pair those up with a set of $50-65 A* or Icon knee armor and I say you got some protection.

wow - glad to see there are many other fellow riders on the forums.

I ride with JR alter ego over pants to work, I'm guilty of not wearing over the ankle boots on my 10 min commute to work in the mornings though. I don't ride in often, but i do wear everything else. And for my more spirited rides I just bought a 1 piece leather suit, and I have my A* boots to wear with it.

I've heard mixed reviews on those kevlar lined jeans...and from what i remember they don't really do much.

But yes, i can't stand the squids in their t shirts and flip flops...they're going to end up like this girl...and thats just not cool
