TO ALL POOL SHARKS: Which kinda cue stick is good for me?

I've been playing POOL for quite sometime now, but I'm really illiterate about it. I usually just go to bars and play w/ their cues. I really wanna get a cue stick of my own now, and I was wondering which would be best for me...

I'm around 5'7... 150 lbs..

I play a finesse game, I'm the kinda player that just likes to nudge things in... I really want a lot of control...

Any idea what kinda pool stick would be good for me?

Please keep in mine I'm not made of money! Thanks in advance for any cue stats.

Try a Cuetec, they make great sticks that are affordable (~$100+). 19oz should be an okay weight. Im not an expert either.

If you want to step up...Meucci makes some Kick arse cues too.

But what do I know, even I don't own my own cue.... 😉

My experience is that almost anything that doesn't come with a pool table, in sitting in a pool hall is better. my cue is probly about thirty buck but it's is a hundred time better than the ones.

BTW the tip on that cue is screwed up. That can be replaced right? mind you the leather and the part that it connects to both need to be replaced if possible, is it? maybe i should just by a nicer one anyway.

The cues in pool halls have a completely different feel to them. They seem to clunk, and plus they don't have my nice grip

19oz isn't heavy at all, I myself prefer a 20 or 21 oz cue. I myself am not a heavy hitter. Those $30 spalding cues are just crap. I don't mind using house cues, just makes it look like you can't play...😉

BTW: I think they are 1 piece so you can't fold them up and walk out with them.

Hehe, makes sense.. "I'll just fold this up right here and, er... stick it down my pants. do do do do" ~ "HEY YOU WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING! STOP!" ~ "Oh sh!t, run , run!"

Here are the cuetecs.
Take a look at the strickland series. They retail $139

IIRC...you're from the east bay/Union city correct?
Last time I went to edgies in Milpitas they had some stricklands for about $100.. You should go check it out..

I read somewhere that the way to go is to have a brass sleeve and a stainless steel (male type thing that screws in w/ the sleeve)... any idea what I'm talking about?

Check this site out, they are a good supplier for billiard stuff. Your best bet is to call them and have them send you a catalog, thier site is a pain to use.

I think your best bet will be to get a "Hustler" cue, it is a 2 piece stick that looks like a bar stick. The ones they sell are made my Dufrin, a good company from Canada. I have two of them, as well as a very nice McDermit, and they play as well as any stick you will find.

You should try to get a lighter stick if you like the finesse game, and you may want to get the shaft turned down to a smaller tip size. 13mm is standard, I have one at 10.5 wich gives you more english control, but can be hard to play with at first. I think a 11.5mm tip would be a good size.

Some sticks to feel like they hit softer, because the ferrul, the white plastic tip, is made of a softer material. Meucci's feel like they hit soft, but they are pretty pricey, and you may find you don't like the soft feel. Best to try one if you can.

Bottem line is you dont have to spend a ton of money, if you get a basic McDermit, Vicking, or a Dufrin, you will be happy with it. Just stay away from your $30 Wal-Mart stick.

Once you get Muellers catalog, you may want to look at getting the stuff to replace your own tips. That way you can go with a slightly softer tip, that will let you get more english on the ball. Also will want to get a tip shapper.

Good luck with you playing..

I don't mind playing with the house sticks...prefer my own though. As long as the house sticks are straight...its not that bad.

There are 3 types of pool cues I would swear by any day of the week. Check them out:

McDermott

Meucci

Last and certainly not least,

Joss

Personally I think the Meucci are the highest quality but they're all excellent cues. Choose a weight which is comfortable for you. I personally love a 21oz. cue, some will tell you it makes you inaccurate. I say play me. 😉

Wow, all these cues are amazing.. and amazingly expensive for me 🙁 Are there any good value cues that are less than 100 dollars? And I'm talking about $99.99 🙂

Guppy, try one of the "hustler" cues from muellers. They are very nice, and if you have a few friends that want them too, you can get a real good deal. My favorite is the 18oz. stick, but I play with a 15oz too. And order yourself some good chalk, like masters, it is real cheap. If your poolhall has bad chalk, then no stick you can get will compensate for that.

Oh, and as far as the dirrerance in high $$ sticks, its all in the inlays, and somewhat in the joint. But the bottemend of any quality line will have the same basic shaft as the top $$ sticks, though the ferrul might/will be differnt. A spliced but is said to hit softer then a solid butt, but I can tell no differance.

To repeatmyself, the best deal of any stick has to be the Dufren "sneaky petes" or "hustler" cues, that look like bar sticks, but are 2 piece. These are real good stick, with there more expensive one being all you would ever need.

Guppy, if you're a really serious pool player, and are good, your stick choice really shouldn't matter. I've seen "sharks" pick up the most warped "house" stick and just kick butt. It's the mechanics of your game that matters most. Certainly, a personal stick of your liking is condusive to your game, but don't think that a "good" stick is going to improve your game. You still have to adhere to the basics.
