3dfx got worn down and lost. It's sad because Nvidia now has almost no competition except ATi and I fear with the technology Nvidia has aquired from 3dfx....there will be no competition at all.

The only person who's happy is Hardware. The fact is that 3dfx had not been nvidia's competitor for sometimes now and had not affect the pricing of nvidia OEM cards one way or the other, most of you guys just don't see that. On the retail front, Creative and hundreds of other GeForce cards makers have to compete against each other, that's why the GeForce GTS can be had for under $200, not because of the V5. Stop spreading the fear with lies and bias predictions.

<< So what is the point of producing a $500 card then? >>

A lot of misconceptions here. The answer to this question should be pretty obvious: because enough people would buy it at that price to make it worthwhile to produce it. More generally, any time a producer can segement a market by producing a sufficiently differentiated product in a cost effective way, they will do so. Think about it this way, what would those people who go out and buy products such as a $500 USD GF2 Ultra buy if it didn't exist? Perhaps something less expensive? Think about it.

So.....ermm.....what's gonna happen next??

Well agreed on the point that Nvidia would not be producing cards that worth 500 bucks if people cannot afford them.

<<...what would those people who go out and buy products such as a $500 USD GF2 Ultra buy if it didn't exist?...>>

How about a good retirement savings plan?

Its funny you mention that because a recent poll/report came out here in Canada suggesting that a lot of people expected to retire by winning the lottery...LOL. I didn't know there were so many delusional people out there 🙂.

<< Nvidia would have to lower their price until the market thinks it's affordable. >>

Yeah like Intel did before AMD came along.

Yeah this sucks, but they are still in this to make money. If I was the nVidia head hancho I would have bought 3dfx too, and to be honest not givin a crap about everyone complaining because that is what making money is all about. They are just trying to make a profit, but it still sucks. However, you can get an MX for about $100, not too shaby.

I always root for the underdog, I hate the big bad boys. That's y I bought AMD (although they're not as little as before). That's why I still have the Rage Pro on my system (it's a shame I still don't have the Radeon replacing it) 🙂
Anyway, go AMD & ATI 🙂

I i would do that before I'd be stuck with an ATI Rage128 or something because they claimed to be good and seemed the best price/performance cards; but I knew better. Now I'll wait for a new etalon to be shaped; that would probably be something like NV with good 2d and dynamic geometry acceleration or something.

Muadib -
This was probably caused by the first shock of seeing Q2 HW accelerated after playing it for several months in SW mode; and that was on a V2. Also I guess you didn't see how a 2 year old V2 8MB runs Unreal faster than a 32MB TNT.
I could have switched to NV if the difference between T&L/no T&L would be somehow comparable to HW rendering vs. SW rendering. Ahhh, the old times...

brand loyalty is a bunch of crap IMO, am I happy NO! do I like 3dfx NO! but they did keep vid card prices below 1000 bucks!

<< bigshooter, $400 US IS $600 Canadian...even at $300 US thats $450 Canadian + Taxes puts it at $500+. Thats where we get this idea that Nvidia cards are going to be $500+. >>

I don't see a point mentioning this! Its not Nvidia's fault that the Canadian dollar is worth so little($.65), and definately not for the Canadian taxes (15% where I live). However, the American dollar is worth more(therefore buying alot more as well), you can't compare the dollar for dollar value and blame a Nvidia for it, we might as well compain to every American company then!

<< Btw I bought my Voodoo card for $250 Canadian. >>

Well, you can buy a Geforce 2 MX for $180 CDN! Doesn't mean squat.

I can't see how your saying a 3dfx product is more superior in 2D performance. I'm in the computer graphics industry and I can't rave more about Nvidia products! The Quadro series(although may seem expensive), its actually very CHEAP compared to its competitors, and is excellent for 2D and 3D graphic rendering. OXYGEN and FIRE GL have far more expensive, yet only comparable 3D rendering cards than Nvidia. I have no idea what your talking about Blackhawk2.

I can't see this 3dfx takeover as a bad thing. 3dfx hasn't been a very contributive competitor for more than a year. Their products were always delayed. Products were reduced to making SMP PCB boards to increase graphic speeds(instead of creating new chips & architecture). They definately had good technology under their sleeves with Gigapixel and FSAA, however it takes money to make money. 3dfx no longer had the capital to carry on their company, hence why they sold it. They went downhill since they purchased STB and pissed off Creative(their best reseller).

What I can see in the future is that there will always be competition. If a company falls, others will rise to replace them. Its called "business".

and i was waiting for the next generation of voodoo graphic card with tv to replace my voodoo3 3500tv
this sucks
wondering if nvidia brought the tech for making tv card too
maybe we will see NV20tv hehe
but with only ATI as compettior the price will go high, as they may lost sales but they make more profit this way
and mx card is totally unacceptable
they got you one way or another.
get your wallet out or go home unhappy with mx type card at today's high end video card price.
this sucks
the worse thing....
which one do you guys think is more likely to happen
ATI keep up the nivdia
or
3dfx make comeback

3dfx can never make a comeback. Nvidia bought all their property which includes the "Voodoo" name, SLI, VSA-100, Gigipixel and their Rampage technology.

3dfx is gone. Its Nvidia now.

<< my love system >>

Ya know its funny as all hell when guy has a "love system" complete with specs sitting there calling people "Nvidiots".

Just look at Creative: buy out the innovating competition (Aureal), quit innovating yourself (SB Live!), and allow prices to stay inflated (the BS Live! still costs $99 retail!). If you're not innovating and releasing new products, then what is there to force the price of older products down?

Yes, my portfolio is very happy, thank you very much. Heavily weighted with NVDA, and bought more Friday @ $38. I'll live with my TNT2Ultra forever if I have to. 🙂

Goddamit...

This is not the first company I really liked that dissapeared...

I would only buy Quantum HDD's; now they merged with Maxtor which I hated and there'll be no more Quantum HDD...

Hey, I'm still devoted to Abit, are they going to go under too? :Q
