TNT2 M64 half broken?

My friend's rig has a TNT2 M64 card that displays 2D apps with no problem. When I try to start a 3D game like Roller Coaster Tycoon, the game never starts and the system freezes.

Without changing anything else, I put the TNT Vanta from my spare rig into his computer and the games work.

Is it possible that this card can only have the 3D portion of it broken while 2D works fine?

The TNT2 M64 has a heatsink/fan. Besides, wouldn't the game at least start before it got overheated?

I had a problem with TNT2 M64 in TOCA2. The same as you describe. I found that lowering the AGP Aperture in the BIOS fixed the problem. I have 128 MB RAM, so I halved the Apeture, to get 64 MB.
Good luck.

The cause of this problem is simple: the M64 SUCKS A$$. This is not just my personal opinion after having had one (and subsequently handing it off to an unsavvy friend of mine), this is the general knowledge of anyone who knows vid cards. NVIDIA embarassed themselves by releasing this VERY crippled TNT2 card.
Could also be a driver issue...what brand & are you using Detonators? You should always use Detonators with NVIDIA cards.

holdencommodore, I too have 128MB RAM and the AGP aperture was set at 64MB. I dropped it to 32MB and it was a no go. Dropped it to 16MB and it worked! I guess this is a real crapper of a card. And to make matters worse, its an I/O Magic.

It sometimes depends on the game. For example, Need For Speed: High Stakes will run with the AGP Aperture set to anything, but on the other hand, TOCA 2 will only run with the Aperture set to half the amount of memory in the system.

I'm gald it all worked out! :)

You may want to try to o/c the TNT2 by using a program called TNTClk. Just be careful when using it :)

Lowering the aperture to 16 sets bios back to 1x agp mode this is usualy a driver problem although this is a work around to get a game or 3d app. to run sometimes.
