The 1st season and a good portion of the second season was Roddenberry blowing through the scripts for the never produced Star Trek Phase 2 TV series. These scripts were pretty dated and sometimes a bit ridiculous by the time they were adapted in the late 80's, resulting in stuff like this:

The episode that drives me crazy the most is the TOS Naked Time followup "The Naked Now", where a virus that's transmitted by contact makes people act drunk and it somehow affected Data---and he then bangs Tasha Yar. It makes me think that Roddenberry was just an old horndog looking for excuses to show crap like that.
 
Yeah, TNG season 1 was pretty bad. It might be worth it for that dude in a star trek dress picture though, if only they could have gotten a hairier guy with a beard to do it. Riker in a dress LOL. Its sort of like how the Simpsons season 1 actually is not funny and yet somehow survived to become awesome.

Indeed. There's no getting around it: TNG became immensely better once Roddenberry's control was taken away.
 
Man that season sucked. Space Taliban. Space Salamanders. Bugs that crawled into the back of your neck in a hilariously awful looking special effect. Incompetent crew being saved by Wesley all the time. Wesley nearly gets lethal injection, but they cop out at the last moment. 🙁 Then there's the face painted heads popping out of makeup boxes on the transporter. Truly, truly awful season.

Then Warf became tactical officer. And things were awesome.

I separate TNG by "pre-beard" and "post-beard". Once Riker gets his beard, the magic starts to happen 🙂
 
Don't forget the plush boulders, asphalt monsters, Riker's great fighting skill and boners set to kill in the Starfleet uniforms.
No, really, first season and some parts of the second season are really not why I love TNG so much. Scripts were really outdated and laughable.
