Tler, wd, ich10r

Two questions... first, I have a four drive raid 10 array on an ICH10R with 4 750gb wd se16 drives (WD7500AAKS) that works great (TLER turned on)

One drive failed, and I bought a caviar black WD7501AALS, I think, to replace it, but I can't turn TLER on on the new drive. I shouldve bought an RE drive, but I needed it quickly and I have the black here already... so... first, has anyone succeeded at getting old firmware onto a WD drive and getting WDTLER working again, or is there anything I can do to mitigate the issue and make it as good as it can be? (on ICH10R)

second question... I bought two 2gb caviar green WD drives too, and mirrored them on my server for long term picture storage. no TLER available on those either... Am I being stupid by even using them? I don't plan on spending $249 for RE drives, because I can't, but are there other drives from other manufacturers that can be raided without issue and without doubling the price?

okay... third question... sending back the SE16 to WD for warranty replacement. Any chance that they send me back a drive that can use TLER? doubt it, but wondering if anyone has experience in that regard.

Thanks!

2nd question: use the intel disk manager it has an option to check for errors and fix them.

i usually run this about once a month and it finds a few sectors that don't jive. its the best proactive you'll get with that crappy raid controller.

real raid controllers have a setting after 3-15seconds start looking for bad sectors - this proactive saves your butt more than you think.

Thanks for that info...

I'll try and run that process occasionally. I have about 8tb of total storage at the moment, and most of it is okay and TLER enabled, but going forward I have to come up with a better solution than this...

is everyone just running RE drives? If I had the money I would, but this is the first drive failure I have had with WD caviar (mostly black, but this was a blue failure) drives, including a whole lot of 250s, 500s, 750s and 1tb drives... I haven't felt the desire to use anything other than WD drives because they have been so good so far...
