The overall trophy went to the Team Crazy Redhead Porsche RSR, which led almost every lap, finishing up with 681 laps, or 2043 miles.

The winning Porsche ran without a hiccup throughout the event, turning the fastest race lap in the process and winding up 30 laps ahead of the second place car.

That honor went to another Porsche, the 1974 911 of Lost ?n Spaced Racing, which climbed into the second spot in the final hour.

Third overall, just a lap down from the second-place car, went to the beautifully-prepared Acura TL fielded by Team Honda Research, a group of Honda engineers from Ohio, the hottest sedan in the 58-car field.

pics and details of car

Car pulls so hard to redline that you'll hit it every time if your not looking, which is bad for back lash into the tranny, so we put in a small shift light and softened the rev limiter by increasing the fuel cut duration.

(Basically stock engine, retuned ECU, port matched intake manifold.)

I can already hear bitching about the ugly ass spoiler (i mostly agree), but apparently the whole thing was wind tunnel tested. 😕

my dad was thinking of a new car, and though mom shot him down for the moment, i did mention the TL and he does like it..

we might keep teh saturn still.. it still runs with 109K on the clock. 99 SW2.

yeah... too bad it finished in front of a rwd BMW

I fail to see how beating a RWD vehicle makes my preference for a MR or RR layout invalid.

...and why do you prefer MR or RR?

Most of the advantages of RWD (better cornering/acceleration, more fun to drive, can be driven closer to the edge of traction), plus some automatic weight over the rear tires which improves acceleration even more, and can improve cornering too. Mind you, you have to watch out for snap oversteer, but a good driver shouldn't have too much trouble with that.

There's a reason why Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Indy cars, and others are all MR/RR layouts.

I take it you actually race an MR/RR car then or at least participate in some form of competition?

I autoX'd my MR2...but then it got stolen 🙁

However, my personal experience has nothing to do with it. Either it's true, or it's not.

Well theres a lot of magazine racers on this board who bash FWD when they have never been on any kind of track in their life... they almost sound like magazines.

There's nothing wrong with the FWD layout...my current car is FWD, and it's a better layout for a daily driver...but MR/RR just offers too many advantages as far as performance is concerned.

Point taken about the magazine racers.

I won't argue with that. 🙂

Great car for cone dodging, I had one too. I'm sad I got rid of it. 🙁

MR2s are nice cars. Hell, even the current one is kind of underappreciated. Damn shame the turbo ones are gone for good.

A while ago though, i was at the street races and I got lined up against an mkii MR2 and I was like, awww man, i'm gonna get burned. It ended up being the other way around. Must have been an NA automatic or something. 😀

Mine was actually a NA mk1 (1989). It was in BEAUTIFUL condition though...looked almost brand-new inside. Such a great car. Only $2100 too.

Why'd you sell it?

What are you driving now?

Sold it to make room in the garage. Driving absolutely nothing now. Wife has an 04 Touareg V8 to cart the baby around in. I bum rides off of her. How ghetto fabulous is that?

The 2 was a fun car though. Those 91-92's were a bit tricky at the limit though, especially with grippy tires. The rear suspension had the nasty tendancy to toe out if you hit a bump mid-turn at the limit of adhesion (a'la oldschool porsche 911). Lowering and stiffening up the suspension helped a bit, but never really erased that tendancy. 93-95 were much more benign.

I've never been on a track, but I dislike FWD for a couple of reasons, the main one being torque-steer. I've simply never driven a FWD car that didn't suffer from it (including a previous generation TL, to stay on topic).

I also don't like the counter-intuitive skid-correction of FWD cars (though that may be because I learned to drive, in the snow, in a RWD car, so I'm particularly comfortable doing so).
