looks like it's after MIR and you must activate the Tivo at the point of sale.

I asked the CSR what was different from series one and he said the USB ports. He said within three months they will enabled the ports allowing you to have broadband, picture sharing, mp3, etc. So right now there is no difference, but soon their will be.

Tivo announced this all today calling it the media upgrade http://www.tivo.com/5.3.1.1.asp?article=162
Nothing too new here for ReplayTV 4000/5000+ users... you can do all this already (except the Mp3 playback) with those and you didn't have to pay an extra $100 for it.

Can someone give me the deal with this Tivo and replay TV mess? I had no idea you had to subscribe to anything. I thought its all inside the box. Can someone linkify me to an explaination or give me something to work with?

Got a series 2 already and the broadband is already there "unofficially". I've been downloading program data through my cable modem for 2 months now. :D

Not to get into a Replay vs Tivo debate but here's why I didn't order this.

Friday you can get the Replay 5040 at BestBuy for $170 after $100 rebates with 10% preferred customer coupon.

Pros:
- ReplayTV already has broadband and all that PC sharing stuff, no need to pay $100 more for it later.
- ReplayTV has auto commercial skip on playback of recorded shows (which is all you will watch when you have one)
- ReplayTV's monthly fee is $3 less a month (lifetime sub. is the same as Tivo's at $250)
- You get a new Replay, not a refurbed one.
- I've had a Replay 3020 upgraded with a 80gb HD for over two years now and really like it (but I'd like sharing and auto commercial skip)

Cons:
- The Replay is onlly 40 hours vs. the 60 hours on the Tivo. But since you can upgrade the HD like cake I don't really mind

It's unclear to me if TiVo will offer broadband access with the package or not. It seems that the big plus is a connection to a digital media provider, but that appears to be for the purpose of sharing music.

I won't argue with you, but interface is kind of subjective. I personally find the Replay extremely easy to use (and unfortunetly so does my g/f, which explains the 6 hours of the "wedding story" recorded weekly).

I think on features and picture quality the Replay wins, but which ever you have you're going to support.

Here is comparision, the Replay and Tivo go back and forth. here

Either is 95% the same beast for most of what you will use it for, either is better than regular TV ;)

What's the story with upgrading these with more HD space? I heard rumors that series 2 tivos were not as easy to drop a hard drive in as the old ones...

Depends....the newer series2 can only hold one harddrive (from what I hear...I haven't cracked mine open because 80 hours is plenty of tv for me :p)

I was wondering the same thing, until I read this yesterday...

Linky

The $99 Home Media Option will be downloadable to Series2 recorders from TiVo in the spring.

The new service will allow subscribers to remotely schedule the recording of shows over the Internet. Subscribers will be able to play music and videos as well as view photos from devices connected to the network. The new service also lets subscribers with more than one recorder share content on both recorders. For example, a show seen on a recorder in the living room can also be played on a recorder in a bedroom.

All the Tivos, like all the Replays, can be upgraded using straightforward ultitiles available on the web.

I have both Replay and Tivo at home. The primary advantages of Replay, IMHO, are these three:
1) Commercial skip button on remote. Great when it works (probably 90% of the shows).
2) Easy to record from line-in. (So, for example, you can play a DVD and record it onto the Replay for
future viewing).
3) Shows are organized by Show name. (E.g. navigate down to Sopranos and you then get a list of all
the Sopranos you've recorded). On the Tivo, shows are listed in a flat list by the time they were recorded.
4) "My Replay", the Web site where you can program your Replay.

The advantages of the Tivo:

1) You can prioritize all the shows you want to record. If there are conflicts (both shows on the same time), the
one with the higher priority gets recorded.
2) Navigation/controls are more responsive
3) At the lowest quality recording setting, you can record more on the Tivo, in the same amount of space, than
on the Replay.
4) If I had to bet, I'd bet that Tivo (the company) will outlast Sonic Blue (who owns Replay).

I can't wait for Time Warner to offer Tivo in my market (manhattan).

I would probably get this, but I don't have a phone line and I'm scared of Tivo turning off broadband support since they don't officially support it.

Can you sign up for Tivo service over ethernet initially?
