Okay, I've been doing a lot of reading around and now I'm concerned about how big of a risk it might be to invest in a Tivo at this point in time. From what I've heard, within the past 2 months, the CEO has resigned, the President has resigned, Comcast and DirectTV are no longer partners, and DirectTV accounted for over 50% of Tivo's customers. I don't want to buy a Tivo now only for it to be a doorstop a year from now.

Any thoughts here?

You are overthinking way too much. When was the last time you heard of a company cutting off millions of paying subscribers? Buy it and LOVE it. My bet would be should Tivo erver go under, they will leak a crack that will allow open-source access and updates to be made available....but I don't see Tivo crashing. The only competitors are 1) cable boxes, which universally suck, and 2)ReplayTV which has had a MUCh rockier life than Tivo thus far.
