As far I know with DirecTIVO, you either pay the monthly fee, or pay a one time lifetime fee - unfortunately the lifetime fee applies to the box, not to the owner, so if that box breaks you're out of luck.

I would buy a Toshiba SD400 if you can find one.
The advantage is no monthly fees but you only get Tivo Basic

That what I am talking about the one time lifetime fee. The reason I think its better is because its only $299 and that can add up very quick. Takes only around 3 years and 7 months for the monthly fee to add up to almost $299. After that your paying more and I think a Tivo will last at least 5 years maybe longer.
If it breaks and tivo fixes it you still have the liftetime fee on it.

There is no lifetime fee offered for direcTivo anymore. It was offered briefly, but was discontinued some time ago. Now it is $5/mo forever.

If you are thinking of getting a regular tivo then you should consider the lifetime fee carefully. There are new DVR standards (in particular cc 2.0) that Tivo might support in their new models which you would want to take advantage of. I don't know if they will arrive in the next 2 years, but it's something to think about.
There is really no point in getting a tivo if you just want tivo basic, at least in my opinion. All of the best tivo features are not enabled. With the most important one being the season pass.

He means $5/mo * 12mo = $60 * 5 years = $300.
Even though you can't get lifetime through directv, assuming you could and it was $300, then getting the lifetime service would be a waste unless you had the exact same unit for at least 5 years, when you would finally break even.

I just wish Tivo plus would skip commercis by itself as well so you have no commerials recorded because that can waste a lot of space![]()
MythTV will do that and I think ReplayTV does it as well.

Check your local cable service to see if they have DVRs
I used to own a tivo but dumped it as soon as my cable company offered DVRs.
The advantage was that it could record in HD. Tivo does not record in HD.
