TiVo

Thinking about getting TiVo off their site. How does it work exactly? I got cable now. What all is needed to run it?

I have series 1, but I believe series 2 you can use ethernet to connect to their network to make the daily "call"... but I believe you still need an analog phone connection to setup the box.

You buy their Standalone dvr at bestbuy or otherwise, come home and hook it up, run the setup, and enjoy the goodness that is Tivo. Oh yeah, you either pay them $300 once or $13 a month for the service.

Huh can I drop my cable and just pay them $13 a month or do I have to keep my cable and still pay them $13? I know what TiVo does. Was just wondering whats required to run it.

You keep your cable and still pay the $13 fee to TiVo. So whatever you pay for cable, expect to pay an extra $13 a month for your viewing pleasure 🙂.

or a flat $300 lifetime fee.

Also if you get a Tivo model like the one I have (Toshiba hd-400 or something like that), it comes with free basic Tivo service

Yer not paying for TV service you are paying for a program guide to make selecting the shows you want to record easier...

MAJOR downside to Tivo, only one tuner. If you have Sat. or Dig. cable you can only watch what you're recording. That's THE dumbest thing I've ever seen. I have non-dig cable so I have my cable signal split so I can watch TV and have Tivo recording something else.

I would seriously consider getting the Toshiba SD-H400 which you can read a review here.

The advantage is this includes FREE Tivo Basic instead of paying $12.95/mo or $299 lifetime fee.

I've seen a few deals at Best Buy B&M, Circuit City and eBay.
I'm pretty sure that the SD-H400 is being discontinued by Toshiba. Best Buy no longer carries it and it's getting very difficult to find. Also, Circuit City has never carried it because they don't carry Toshiba products.

Oops on the CC.

Yeah this is getting hard to find but if he can find it, he should buy one.

I agree. I'm loving mine that I got about a month ago (still need to send that rebate in though).

ReplayTV > TiVo

ReplayTV allows you to network your boxes together and record between them without having to pay a fee. It also grabs channel listings from the internet instead of having to dial up.
