I would like to purchase a new tivo unit from the store doesnt matter which one at the moment but will i be able to use the tivo box to recorde with out the service. might consider getting the service when i have more money to spend on it. or can i just use it as a digital vcr to recorde in say 2 or 3 day in advanced.

if you buy a tivo w/ basic service, you can get tvguide for 3 days in advance for free, the Toshiba hd-400 which i use has this feature, great way to have tivo in college (you can get it for $200 and no monthly fee makes it cheap)

EDIT : only third party combo units have basic tivo like my toshiba, tivo only units have no such feature

The Toshiba and Pioneer DVD Recorders with Tivo have this ability too.

The problem is, they'll cost as much (or more) as a standard Tivo with a lifetime subscription. They do have 80GB drives I think, and you can burn the stuff to DVDRs though, so if you want to do that, it might be worth the extra cost.

I ordered it yesterday and got an online receipt. Now I just have to hope it gets here before 11/30.
Still, it's a good price at $244
